Hows it going guys and gals,
I'm new to the forum, twenty years old out of the Hudson Valley in NYS. I'm currently a college student in the SUNY system and will be graduating with a degree in Spanish in May 2012.
I've wanted to be a LEO since before I can speak. My father is one in the area (started in the NYPD in 1986).
I've taken a few tests to get my feet wet, and have scored a 95 on the NYPD exam making me just above #500 on the list.
Not sure what the job market is like for officers at the moment, as I know it fluctuates, but I hope to work in the city.. it'd be a real dream of mine..
I am having a few issues though, wondering if I've seriously hurt my chances becoming an officer... I'll list some of my pros and cons, and maybe get some response from this online community:
Pros
-Degree in a language, Spanish, fluent white male
-Good resume (100+ community service, Leadership positions in school and fraternity)
-Great references (both in school system and several police officers in my town)
-Effective communicator with all, including interviews
-In great physical shape, above average
-Mild mannered and calm, never been in a fight
Cons
-Was arrested at 19 for taking a school uniform I thought would make good halloween outfit.. Never wore outfit, returned after I found it was missed, but was arrested for petit larceny.. Eventually, just handed a Trespassing violation and had to pay fine
-Never have smoked MJ in my life, but took 1 pill of adderall junior year of college to finish paper. No more than that. 1 pill, 1 time.
-Had 3 knee surgeries from age 15-17 but have 100% recovered since
Any advice? Am I looking alright? Should I become dispatcher/ go into military to bolster my resume? Or should I abandon ship..
Thanks for your help, God bless
