Thanks for the welcome. I only found the site after a colleague returned from New York having run the marathon and was saying how the NYPD had to buy their own uniform. One google search later and I found the thread advising new recruits on taking out a loan from the union for it! Amazing!

And yes, in the NYPD, during your first week or so, you need to bring in a money order to buy your gear/equipment. When I went through it was around $685. The NYPD will give you your vest, gun bullets and OC spray. You buy the rest. But in all fairness, you keep your gear. Also, every December you get $500 for gear/uniforms. You can use that money for such or you can spend it on something else.

Welcome to the forum. If you want to be verified (and it's okay with the mods) I can help verify you as a sworn Police officer through the Aware (sorry 'foundation') system at work.
