    Hello from alexandria, IN

I have always wanted to become a LEO, i have acutally chased that dream by enlisting into the army as a MP, HOOAH. i really enjoy the thought of giving back to the community you live in. my over all goal would be to get into DEA or attempt to get onto a swat team. i am looking into SRT school for the army right now. i was wondering if military experience helps during the *in processing* into a academy? well hope this site helps.

+1 for the recruiters! You don't need military MP training to get hired in the civilian world. In actuality, modern day MP's have a distinctly different mission which is mostly geared towards field-deployed combat support and security.

However, from a Marine Corps vet, thank you for your service. We need you nonetheless.

Honestly, I never understood that. None of the communities I ever lived in gave anything to me. However, I don't deny that there may be those who feel that way. If you answer a question like that on your oral board, be prepared to explain what that sentence means to you.

Ahhhh, the good Lord giveth and the SWAT team taketh away... Not exactly the community policing aspect you refer to above, eh?

It only helps if your service is unsullied by official military discipline and you leave your service with an honorable discharge. Once that's accomplished, you'll have a leg up on those who don't have any inoculation to high stress situations.

It surely won't help you during the hiring process, however we may be able to answer a few questions for you.

Of every one hundred men, ten should not even be here. Eighty are nothing but targets. Nine are real fighters, and we are lucky to have them, for they make the battle. Ah, but the One... One of them is a Warrior... He will bring the others back.

    "Wrong door, buddy!"

Let no man's ghost say my training failed him.

I was a USMC MP for a few years before transitioning over to LEO. I would say that you get a slight advantage if trying to hire onto a state or federal position. In fact, you will usually be recruited while in service. Your service years also can be counted toward retirement as well in most cases. At the very least, being a vet will help you in the eyes of the agency IF you behave while in.

As far as the SRT experience, it is the best. The Marine Corps had that too, and they will (in most cases) actually send you to a Civilian Swat School that is reputable. In my days (1994-97) that included Orange County SO, US Park Police and more. It was a very good experience.

With that said, base line policing doesn't help you prepare that much for actual LEO work on the outside. The only good I got out of it was backing up CHP in I-5 in Cali. Being a MP won't be looked at any better (in my opinion) than any other vet. MOS. I do think it would give you a slight taste of police work to tell if you like it or not.

These days, it seems like Iraq and Afghanistan will for the most part keep you from the experiences I had.

    Good luck and welcome!
For me, before there was the Thin Blue Line, there was the Blood Stripe! Semper Fi!

Our fear reminds us that we are not God, our faith reminds us that He is!

**DISCLAIMER** I'm not a current LEO, but have six years experience with two city PD's in NC and TX as a sworn officer. I'm in the process of returning to LEO work ASAP.
