Hello,

I am new to this forum and was wondering about certain things, about being a police officer. I’m 16 years old and have always wanted to become a LE officer. My family has a background in the job; my Dad was a PO for 23 years and now is the director of a police academy. My uncle was a PO for around 11 years also.

I also want to join the force and become a PO. But I want to become one on my own, I don’t want to go to the same Police Academy my Dad is the director at because I don’t want even the slightest chance of having an advantage over the rest of the men in my class. I’m 5"8 and a high school football player. I am in good shape, and well conditioned. During the off season I work at Smoothie King. So I like to think of myself able to take care of myself.

I am just wondering about this career, because I’m going to be graduating High school in just another 3 semesters and want to know what I'm doing after high school.

What College courses should I take? And what degrees should I get?
Should I go to the same police academy as the one my dad is head of?
How much would going to the academy cost?


Btw: my dad and me are close, but the reasons Im asking these questions here are that he doesnt want me to become a police officer, he wants better for me.

As far as the cost of academy it depends on the state you are in and even the county. Some departments will pay for the academy as well as pay you a salary while in the academy. Some places, like MI, you have to pay your own way.
