I hope my nick is not misleading folks. My daughter wants to be a cop, and I have been reading these very interesting boards getting some idea of what a life and career in law enforcement might be like. I totally support her ambition and want to help her make her dream come true. If my nick is poorly chosen, somebody let me know and I'll change it (not sure how to do that, though).

Your username (or "nick," as you call it) is fine, as it isn't implying you are a cop. Nice to see a parent who supports their child's ambitions in this field, which she'll need if she's hired.

Thanks for clearing that up.

I certainly support my daughter in her ambition. I try to strike a balance between cheerleading and discouragement; while it is an honorable and proud thing for her to want to be of service to her community, it can also mean long hours, low pay and physical danger. I want her to have as much information from real, experienced sources as possible, rather than forming her ideas from what she sees on TV or movies. I have encouraged her to read this board and other boards where real police officers post, so she can get it "straight from the source". If police work is what she wants, I'll support her; I'll also be saving up to buy her some Kevlar! ;)

How old is she?

The best thing you can do if she is young is be a real parent, which is sounds like you are. If you raise a child right, she will usually stay out of trouble and make other smart decisions, which will help her in her quest to become police officer (or gain other trusted employment).

Encourage her to study hard, and make the right kind of friends.
