Hi, all.
I'm here for professional as well as personal reasons.
I’ve worked in journalism since 1991. I covered law enforcement and public safety at daily newspapers in Northern California and Oregon for several years early in my career. My dad was career Navy, so the police beat was a natural fit for me as a reporter. Through careful and fair reporting, I helped change the public-information policy of three agencies I covered, building strong relationships with veteran detectives and corrections people in addition to fire and EMS. Currently I work at an LE-focused Web site with some of the nation's best-respected trainers and veterans.
Criminal law and law enforcement have long interested me. In addition to my exposure to LE as a journalist, I also have a paralegal certificate and have worked as editor at a legal newspaper. I also have a number of friends and acquaintances who work in law and law enforcement. Although it's probably a little late for me to become a sworn LEO, I have not ruled out working in the public sector in one form or another. I've always seen journalism as a public service, so it wouldn't be much of a stretch.
Because my current job involves speaking directly to sworn LEOs and the things that most concern you, I'm here mostly to ask questions and better get to know the community and see things from your point of view. I intend to use what I find here as "in-service training," for lack of a better phrase. I hope that being a member will help me do my job better.
