I Enlisted into the Army at 18, worked on Apaches, got a fire underneath me to fly the darn things, and put in a Warrant Officer Candidate packet, and Warrant Officer Flight Training packet. BOTH Accepted! So for the better part of the last decade I've been flying the #1 Helicopter in the world () Just in case you don't believe it's the best! ;)
Anyways I'm looking to make the big move out, I'm fit, can run, do push ups, hand-2-hand combat very well(#2 in my Battalion), and am well versed in Firearms. Not sure if I want to be a Sheriffs Deputy, Local Law Enforcement or State Trooper or join a Highway Patrol outfit(Also most are also Troopers). Or if I should just consider myself lucky to land any position, to get my foot in the door...
Anyways, it's cool to talk to you guys, and meet you brave men and women interested in serving the public. Another question is, can I still be in the National Guard, and be an LEO, cause giving up Aviation and flying the AH-64D would be NEAR impossible. I'd have to still be allowed to take that awesome machine for flights on the weekends/summers, it's honestly like having cotton mouth, and needing a drink, the need to fly Uncle Sugars $30,000,000 bird around once awhile is required, almost like a bathroom break for me(Just not quite that often, hehe). I was one of the first Apache Pilots to see combat in Afghanistan, and flew a lot of combat sorties in Iraq, protecting the brave Soldiers and Marines on the ground.

You might consider a department with an aviation unit, though you could always lateral over after you put some time in with a smaller department.
Of course, you would have to put street time in anyways, as no one ever (with rare exception) is transferred directly to a specialized unit.

Thanks ladies, and gents for the warm welcome. Anyways, I don't have any aspirations beyond street/cruiser uniform patrol, I don't think I'd make a great dedicative, SWAT or even K-9 handler(I have 3 Cats; so I'm a Cat guy) . And I don't think any Law Enforcement Agencies need Apaches for their Aviation Units. Apaches run around 30million, and are Attack Helicopters ONLY(2 Passengers; pilot, gunner), equipped with massive amounts of firepower. I don't think LE needs 30mm Cannons that shoot 650 High Explosive Rounds per minute, or Hellfire Missiles. And if they did, SWAT could always get a hold of a Guard Unit. The Choppers I fly are not Recon/Intel/Observation/News/High speed chase type Aircraft. Apaches are simply, seek and destroy the bad guys, and their hideouts, vehicles and any threat to the true hero's that on slugging it out on the ground rifle to rifle, our Soldiers and Marines.

There is an Army National Guard Aviation Unit right in our county that flies the Apache.
As mentioned, there are a good percentage of deputies who are in the National Guard, and enjoy the military leave benefits our county provides.This career is not a sprint, it is a marathon.
