Hello from OH hopefully soon to be FL

Hi everyone I've been lurking on the board for some time. I haven't posted until now because I've been able to find most of the information I was looking for through the search function. But, of late, I've found that I want to chime in on threads, and getting to "know" a lot of you through your posts and enjoying your sense of humor, etc. I thought it was time to introduce myself so I can start contributing to RP.

That's the essential bit...the rest is background and a bit long if you're interested:

I graduated about a year and a half ago with a BFA in Creative Writing (basically an English degree with writing focus) and have been trying to figure out what I want to do as a career. I am very good at editing and had originally thought I would pursue that but have decided that I don't think it's necessarily the best application of my skills and I would like to do something that would be a necessary service to others.

I have a number of police officers in my family including my father who's a sergeant almost ready to retire. Previously, while I was enthralled with the idea of being a police officer as a child, and still considered it as I grew up, I was dissuaded by people in my family, including my dad. As others on the board have pointed out, if you don't have the support of your family, this can be a very difficult career to be in, and having seen all the time away from family and stress that it can cause, I thought I could always do something else.

My dad, contrary to his previous stance, has actually been suggesting for several months that I get into law enforcement for a number of reasons (which my mom also started backing up). The more I considered it and his advice, the more I learned toward the idea. My boyfriend is a little wary of me being a LEO as he would worry about me, but says that he will be supportive. I have to admit that being with someone who is not only supportive of the idea but would be in the same field does make the decision easier as I don't have to worry that I'm putting them through a family setup that they weren't already putting themselves into before me. Takes a weight off, so to speak.

While my parents would prefer I stick around here, especially if I'm a LEO (the pay is considerably better compared to COL than other places, and they consider it 'safer' despite that we fairly recently had an officer killed in the line of duty), I'm planning on relocating to FL soon, probably central as this is where my boyfriend is living, but would like to make it SE FL at some point.

Well, I think that's enough for now (perhaps even too much). I look forward to being a part of RP with you, and to eventually be a fellow LEO with many of you.

    Thanks

lol not really, but when I'm sitting here in freezing temps and my boyfriend's waxing his car in 75 degrees and sunny, it actually doesn't sound so bad

Welcome from OH. C-Bus pays better than Tol and in many cases the cost of living is cheaper here. Don't rule out COLS.

    Thanks

I had actually considered moving to CBus, especially back when I was leaning on staying in what I have my degree in. I have a few friends in the area who were originally from there and moved back after college also. But, having been here almost 23 years, I think a change of locale would be nice. Besides which either my boyfriend or I have to move if we're going to keep us working, and it makes the most sense for me to be since I don't have two kids and their other parent to consider in my plans (actually, I guess by extension I do).

And, as mscap says, it's hard to beat an OH vs FL winter. That's actually one thing my boyfriend was saying when I was down there in the fall. The weather was beautiful. He said he asked himself in the summer why he moved there and it was kind of miserable, but in the fall and winter he remembers why. He likes coming up here when it's cold and experiencing winter, but only long enough to remember why he's glad he doesn't stay long enough to get sick of it. Down there it's about 77 with maybe a light breeze; here it's 30, snowing, and winds at 26 mph...not too tough a call;)

Welcome! You're right. It's not too tough a call...I'll take the freezing cold over the blistering, sticky heat any day of the week. Of course I'm a dislocated Northerner. So I may just be overreacting to the unbearable summers we have in Austin.

Perhaps But summers in OH (at least around here) actually get pretty sticky/muggy/disgusting as well. I've had more than a few people come up from the southern states and complain that it's actually worse here than they are used to.
