    Hello from VA

    Hello all,

I am from PA but just moved to VA in hopes of becoming a police officer, I am 23 years old, I was a corrections Officer in PA and I hope that I can soon become a Police Officer. I also would like to say that this site is very helpful, and thank you to everyone who contributes to it.

I am applying with Richmond, Chesterfield, and Henrico so if anyone has any insight on these agencies please feel free. Thank all of you.

I know we have a couple here from Chesterfield, hopefully they'll chime in.

From what I've observed, Richmond is trying real hard right now to retain people that are transitioning to those other two localities. Work schedules and benefits vary greatly between those agencies, so make sure you do your homework.

I have done quite abit of homework on these departments. I would have to say Richmond would be my least favorite, are they just hiring anybody or something because I have heard alot of negative stuff about this dept. I have to say it is starting to sway me towards withdrawing my app. Chesterfield is my fav. I think I like the county more than Henrico.

I wouldn't withdraw your app in case the other 2 don't hire you. Just my$.02 and good luck with the process. That's a busy area.

I agree with you Darin, Richmond has been the fastest in the process, it's just that I have been hearing alot of neg. stuff about the Dept. The quality of officer that is watching my back is very important to me, so if they hire anybody, than I would rather not be hired than be alone in a dark alley.

If Richmond is having retention problems they may be a good place for training and experience. A couple years there and you could write your own check for most any agency.

I'm sure they have decent standards and will not hire just anybody.

Richmond's new chief and mayor have cleaned up the retention problem. They have one opening right now and that's because an officer died in an off duty crash.

Chesterfield and Henrico, especially Chesterfield, are hiring on a continuous basis. Chesterfield's salary is lower but hopefully that gets fixed here shortly. You want a department where in 10 years you'll be senior enough to do anything, Chesterfield is the place.
Pittsburgh Pirates- 1st place NL Central 7/15/11

They've got us surrounded? Good. Now we can fire in any direction, those bastards wont get away this time

An amateur will train until they get it right. A professional will train until they can't get it wrong.

You work for Chesterfield? I like Chesterfield better. Please xcuse me if I'm wrong but I think you are referring to a Richmond Sheriffs Office Deputy. My uncle told me that they just had an Deputy killed while coming home from second job. Like I said if I am wrong please excuse me because I have no personal knowledge.
