In the great state of New Jersey, being a "jailer" is considered on the job. Arrest powers are given to us, and our academy is more extensive than most. Sea Girt, NJ to be exact. I started working in the County Jail system for a year before moving to the State level, which I have been for going on 5 years. I work 2nd shift (1400-2200) Sunday thru Thursday in a housing unit filled with 132 Max inmates, mainly Blood gang members, as well as some Latin Kings thrown in for good measure. I am in a dormitory style unit with 66 on my floor (the 1st floor), and 66 on the second floor. I run the entire unit being on the first floor. Movements, running head counts, phones, transfers, lock-ups (to the close custody units). I am presently 29 years old, and with 25 years in, I will be collecting my pension at 48. I have a bachelor's degree in criminal justice from the Richard Stockton College of New Jersey. I could have been a municipal cop, but the pay wasn't anywhere near the State Corrections gig, or I would have jumped on it. Its all about the money and the pension in the end. No one grew up saying they wanted to be a prison guard, but there is no better gig than working for the government. Anyhow, I am glad to be part of the site, and hope to contribute to it often. I will not post any more spam to annoy anyone.
