He's only 19, let's try to give him some light at the end of the tunnel...
Jimcabtv, dare I say (since you don't want to join the military) the military may be one of the few options you have left if you still want to do LE work. If you're upfront & honest about your past (it has been 3 years since you got baked right?), you may still have a chance at enlisting for the service of your choice. I say this not because the military has lowered their standards but there's a war going on & they need the people. Perhaps after serving sometime (maybe in a law enforcement type job) AND if you stay clean & trouble free you might have a fighting chance in being in civilian LE later in life. Don't forget you can also get your college degree(s) while in the military. Plus you stated you wanted to work "for the government someday." This will give you a chance to see govt. bureaucracy at its best. Afterall the military is the government.
The only other viable "stepping stone" option I see personally is MAYBE Corrections. And that's a maybe. They still do background checks to get in too but as an LE professional myself let me just say I've seen some strange Human Resource choices (e.g. "How'd THAT guy get hired!?).
It may not be what you want to hear but you're 19 & this is the real world now. Don't be a hater-- just my $.02.
ps
Hopefully, I didn't tick off any military & Corrections guys...![]()
