    Hopeful USDM in school.

    Hi,
My name Is Andrew, I'm a Junior at The Ohio State University double majoring in Criminology and Sociology. I'm extremely in the USMS and trying to get a job with them after I'm done with school. This forum has already been extremely helpful, with alot of information that I found by using the wonderful "search" button (I'm not a noob to forums). Anyway, I wondered if anyone had any information on the USMS co-op program. The USMS website doesnt really have any information on it. I've sent Switchback a PM because he seems to be the man to talk to then it comes to the USMS, but he hasn't replied yet. But to be honest any info that anyone could give me on the USMS would be greatly appreciated. I understand that the job is not all glamour and glory, and that you have to pay your dues transporting prisoners and working the courts for a while at first as an 082 but I'm ok with that. I mean hey, we can't all be chasing Wesley Snipes across rooftops (sorry, a little joke.) Anyway, Hi everyone, and Thanks!

    -Andrew

While we have a few USDM's here who may be able to provide feedback about USMS, another good source to check out for federal LE (if you haven't checked it out already) is: 911jobforums.com

You'll have to pardon my lack of response. I've had the travel experience from hell (don't fly US Airways). With no help for them, Contental was able to track down cases, which contained several thousand dollars worth of guns and equipment.

Anywho... I hate to say it, but I know next to nothing about the co-op or intern programs. All I know is that traditionally, they appear to be little more than a minority recruitment tool. If you can get in, it's a good backdoor into the Service.

Now, it is rather hard to just tell someone about the Service. Why don't you ask specific questions and I am sure that I can be more helpful.

Well, since I'm not even CLOSE to a minority maybe the internship or co-op won't help me much. I guess my first question would be how did you manage to get into the USMS? For example, State Police first? or a Local Cop? Or some other area of federal service? I also wonder how much me having a college degree is going to help my chances of getting in, for example does basically everyone in the USMS have a degree or not so many? I'm by no means going to stop going to college or anything, I'm just wondering.

The 1811 annoucement for the USMS was for folks that are already 1811s with other agencies.

USMS only hires 082s off the street......and only way to do that now is by coming off of active duty military.

I saw on another board that the USMS MAYBE doing a general hire for 0082s in a year or so.......but you never know because the DOJ budget is all screwed up due to the flooding here at Main......

As for the internship and CO-OPs. I did an internship back in 97 and had a good time....but decided that USMS wasn't what I was looking for. Lots of Court time for the small offices.......and it takes a while to get where Switchback is doing all the cool stuff.

I was flat out told not to even apply for a CO-OP (I did anyway and HQ turned me down) because it was a tool to recruit minorities.....and I didn't have a chance in hell.......

I came in back in the (not so) old days when 1811s were hired directly from the street. That meant everyone competed equally. Most everyone in these classes had degrees and either military or LE experience. I think there were about 2-3 that did not have a degree in my class.

While (for now) degrees are not required, it is very difficult to be competitive without one. Having JUST the requirements won't get you hired. I assure you that you will be hard pressed to ever get promoted (assuming that you even get hired) without having a degree.

Get your degree and go ahead and apply. While you have that working, go on with your life and make other endeavors to make yourself more marketable, such as state/local LE. If you get shot down, reapply with some experience under your belt. The military is another good option.
