Just wanted to say hello to everyone. I am a 26 year old college student from metro detroit. I am a CBPO hopeful. Currently in the last part of the process ( I hope lol). Been browsing around for a while and learned a lot of useful information. I hope to be able to learn more from all of the experienced people on this board. Oh for GODS SAKE!!! If you are going to have a degree DON'T GO INTO CBP!!!!

Go apply for a real agency that will respect you for anything but a booth filler! If you MUST go into CBP DO NOT, I repeat NOT stay in Detroit!!! Detroit CBP is the armpit of the world, the only thing you will do is listen to hours of lecture on how great of a job we are doing and how it's our responsibility to stop terrorists. Then an hour later you'll be told "take the paperwork as down time and let the trucks/cars go! Keep the traffic moving"! I've spent over eight years here and the only encouragement I've heard is to keep traffic flowing at all costs, don't ask questions and don't slow down the freight. Do your self a favor and go to another state, another agency, or if Detroit CBP is your only option maybe think of just standing in front of one of the many international trains.... which we don't search properly either by the way!

Thanks cinnamon. To Chewy: Bawhahahaha, I heard this about detroit, including reading some of your other posts. Detroit was my last choice on the list. Moved back here after the service and regret it almost everyday. I hate Canada and I dont like people telling me not to do my job. Looks like I might be in trouble LOL:eek:

You can try for another port or, if you come here after a little time try to transfer. Maybe go to the southern border for a while or another port up here... any port!:D I'm trying to get my wife to move, I'd ultimatly like to go to the Soo but I'd take any other port. I'm hoping to go to a port that has a little less traffic. One of our biggest problems is that traffic is just nonstop and the fact that our crossings are both privately owned border crossings makes it even worse, then there's the automotive companies.... Ultimatly the job is what you make of it, Detroit does suck, there's no getting around that, but if you come here with that in mind you might be able to deal with it a little better and just focus on what you can do instead of what you can't. I get very very upset with our people be cause I feel that this could be a GREAT place to work, we get cars, trucks, trains, ships/tugs and I think that if they focused on us doing what our job is supposed to be and maybe did a little training to help our Officers know HOW to target shipments and such then we could be more productive and still keep traffic moving. Unfortunatly I'm not in charge so...

It's been so long since I been in the pipeline, I forgot some of the locations I chose. I know I put AZ, Miami, San diego. I heard detroit is not to keen on releasing people for transfers, is that true? The problem you guys are having sounds a lot like the prison I used to work for (also in metro detroit sort of). Mind if I ask another question? Hate to sound like a sixteen year old tool LOL but what are the chances of an officer getting sent to some of those advanced training schools that the Public Affairs people throw around when talking about CBP? That all depends on your port and bosses. Some places love to send people for training. Our port is notorious for not letting people go to TDY's but the last couple years they've been better. I've only got to go to our Hazmat Coordinator school (FLETC) and to our Radiation Academy (RADACAD in WA state). My wife went to a couple including PIVIT. All you can do is wait till you have a year in or so then start sending emails through your chain of command requesting what you want. Some places will like to do it some won't but if you keep hassling them eventually they'll give in... just make sure you're off probation before you hassle them too much :D

Go south young man...go south. That is a great place to learn and cut your teeth in the drug game. Our southern borders suck *** just as bad as Chewy's view on Detriot, but at least you get to do your job uninhibited by managagement for the most part. I hated living there, but wouldn't of changed my job experience for anything. As a line monkey Inspector I seized over 14,000lb's of narcotics in 4 years. Pick your port carefully, because some of them are like black holes to get out of once your there.

That's what really depresses me... I'm counting the days and looking forward to what I'm going to do when I retire.... in 15+ years! I should be enjoying NOW, not the future. Oh well, my wife is finally filling out her OF612 so we can have it ready to send for openings, like the current opening in Winnipeg for Preclearance. A change may be a comin!!

I also hear rumor that Detroit will be hiring about 7 more dogs... Hopefully this is true, maybe now that my IA investigation is done and erased from my file I can finally get a dog!

Thanks everyone. Damn K-9 now thats what I'm talking about!! keeping my fingers crossed for getting the southern border. On my list i put all southern border choices first. Hell anything would be better than detroit, and if I get Port Huron I might cry :(
