Good Day to everyone. My name is Steve and I am currenty in the application process to become an office for the Howard County Police Department. I was doing a little research online when I came across this forum; it's seems like a great place to communicate with other applicants, as well as have questions answered by verified LEO's.
A little background on myself:
I was in NJROTC throughout my four years in highschool which initially sparked my interest in the military. So after going through the testing an entrance processing, I ended up joining the US Navy in August 2001 as an Air Traffic Controller. I graduated as Honor Student and first in class in A School down in Pensacola, FL. This gave me first pick in available orders; I chose NAS Patuxent River, MD. After being advanced to an E4 and earning 58 college credits, I separated from the Navy in September 2004 under Honorable Conditions. I then started working as a Commercial Security Consultant; designing CCTV, Intrusion and Access Control Systems for businesses, and government contractors. I am doing great in the business world, but it just doesn't fit me as a career.
So in October of 2005, I sat down with my significant other and did some thinking. Because Law Enforcement has appealed to me for as long as I can remember, it was the first thing that came to mind. The ball hasn't stopped rolling since. I did my first ride along in the beginning of November, and I loved it! I took the written test on November 30, 2005 and out of 100 questions, I got 92 correct. Then I took the physical Fitness Test on December 17, 2005. This consisted of situps, 99% Body Weight Bench Press, and 1.5 mile run. All of this was simple because its pretty much the same thing we did in the Navy. It sure was cold for that run though. Anyway, I passed through the physical fit test with no problems and had my oral interview last Thursday on January 19. It went GREAT! I have the interpersonal communication skills (and college credits) that I earned from the Navy to thank for it. I was given a date for my polygraph test on the spot (This coming Wednesday). I've had to take one Polygraph before when I got my Security Clearance for the Navy; so I know what to expect a little bit. I'm still very anxious though. If all goes well, onto the BI, Psych, and Medical. The academy start date is in July 2006.
Anyway, I'm happy to have come across this forum, and look forward to becoming an active, verified member in the next year.
-Steve
