Naval Officer looking for a job, Hello

    Hello all,

I have already put out a few posts and sent a few PM's so I better do a quick bio.

I'm 23, just graduated in May from Iowa State University with a degree in Political Science. Got a full ride from the Navy and was commissioned through NROTC as an Ensign, USNR shortly after graduation. I was scheduled to go on active duty, become a division officer on an amphibious assault ship, and have a fine Navy career. However, due to some factors (overmanning, decommissioning of ships, money) the Navy put me in the Individual Ready Reserve and said go look for a job about a month before I graduated.

The plus side, free education and a commission. The down side, no job. I have been working at Brinks since May. Although being an Armed Courier is kinda neat (I had the world series trophy) I am definetly overqualified.

I want to serve my country, military or otherwise. Im looking and applying for fed jobs. Im going to start a masters program in March in Security Management. Glad to be here and I hope to learn alot and one day have that "verified LEO" status.

I am very interested in the upcoming Air Marshal hiring. I can probably surmise I wont be qualified because of that little thing called no prior LE experience.

Once again, glad to be here.

Welcome aboard...spent the better part of ten years in the canoe club.

With no practical knowledge, only what I've picked up through rumor and innuendo...give careful and long consideration to the Air Marshal gig. Others might have better information, but I have yet to hear anything good about it.

Regardless, good luck and welcome aboard

Find some current AM's and talk to them one on one before making any great leaps.

Go on some ride alongs with police departments and get a feel for what cop work is like. Ask questions and start investigating what you would like to do. Count on your application taking 6-12 months for any LE position. Feds take even longer for investigative jobs (special agents etc). Switchback can give you the scoop on USMS.

How many Coast Guard men does it take to do a burial at sea?

    6. Two to push the body overboard and four to stomp it into the mud! :D

Chewy, is it true you have to be over six feet tall to be in the Coast Guard? I heard they want you to be able to walk to shore if the ship sinks. :D

As you can see several here have a great sense of humor and many on here are verified LEO's, so you'll get a wealth of knowledge to form your decision.

    Good luck to you!

There are some good things about the Air Marshals... The MAIN reason people go to them is for the money. A lot of fed criminal investigators left their, already good paying jobs, to go to the Air Marshals.

A guy from my office was one of them. He came back. Another guy from my SRT jumped to them as well. He is still with them. e will not be staying with them, however. As I understand it, the job has a lot of potential. However, the management make it a lot worse than it has to be. There is a lot of mismanagement and poorly thought out policy that makes things unbearable for most in the job.

BTW, welcome to RP. Glad to have you with us.

Also, something for you to consider... I have never been one to talk down education. However, a masters in the fed arena does not give you all that many points on the app... nothing that the experience of an LE job spent during that same job wouldn't offer. Then, in addition to the experience points onthe app, you have the life experiences from said job. Just a thought.

Good luck and let us know how we can help.
