Okay, I'm not even going to attempt the accent, but this video clip is what I thought of when you said South Dakota (and yes, I know the video is from a movie about a city in North Dakota!):

Hi Elizabeth,
At the risk of pointing out the obvious, do you always have a cell phone with you with a good battery? Also, do you always have service wherever you are in western SD? Also, do you have a car charging cord for your cell phone so you can charge it when you need to? Another thing you might consider is a second cell phone. Without getting too technical, there are two common technologies in cell phones around the US. The major CDMA providers are Verizon and Sprint. The major GSM providers are AT&T and T-Mobile. Which ever one you have, consider getting another one from the other technology. For example, lets say you have GSM service now on AT&T or T-Mobile. Go to Craigslist, Ebay, wherever, and get a CDMA phone that was either on Verizon or Sprint. You don't even have to bother getting service. Get a car cord and keep it in the car in case you ever have to call 911. You probably already know this, but at the risk of pointing out the obvious, cellular service providers have to pass wireless 911 calls in the United States even if the phone isn't currently subscribed.
Another thing I encourage people top get is a good GPS. Granted, you might not need it for everyday. You probably know where everything is around your area. On the other hand, what if something happens and you get turned around? Garmin, and probably other GPS units, have a Where Am I feature. You could be traveling somewhere that you are unfamiliar with and it will show you where the nearest hospital, police station, gas station, etc. is located.
Finally, get and keep a decent flashlight in your car. It doesn't have to be expensive. Walmart and other places have some decent LED flashlight for under $20.

I do always have a cell phone and a car charger with me but I dont necessarily always have service, sometimes it drops out along my route home. I switched from sprint to att about a year and a half ago. Can I do some research and find out if that old phone is the right kind?
I had heard that 911 calls went through but I didnt know if that was true.
The few times I have used GPS has been on my phone so I never thought about a separate one.
And I keep a good flashlight in my car as well. It looks like I am about halfway there! thanks for your response!

My new hero!
I mostly do portraits (pencil and charcoal) but I do graphic design, animation, some personal and business identitys (logos and things).
I am trying to draw the USS Independence as a background for a portrait right now. the technical drawing is much harder for me but I like new challenges.
This is one of my favorites from a couple years ago...
