I had a mate that was not really into country music but I showed him this clip and he was crying by the end of it. He and his high school girlfriend got pregnant and had a son. He gave up a lot of his dreams to be a Dad. Just for the record they got married before the son was born and are still happily together years later with another child, but it was not planned the way it happened and they both sacrificed a lot of their dreams to be good parents. This song rocked him...especially the line about "the mistake I made now covers the refrigerator." (or something like that)

I love this song by Will Smith.
I know it is about when Will and his first wife broke up, but the lessons he wants to teach his son are what I want my son to learn.
Respect others.

Be a gentleman
Basically be a class act. Someone people look up to.

This is probably going to soun really bad but this song was one that made me think of my Mum.
My mum was single and made a lot of saccrifices to raise me and I reckon she did a fairly good job. I think I turned out okay. I never knew we were poor because Mum would never let me. She worked extra work coming up to Christmas and birthdays so that I got a new bike or racing car set or other stuff. I was far from spoilt but I did not miss out on much. We managed to go on holidays and I went on camps etc.
In the song, the mother is a hooker, but when I was younger I never really got that part of it. All I got from the song was that she was a good mum and sacrificed a lot for her children so that they did not have to go without.

Keep making those cool birthday cakes and he sure will. It is things like that that I remember most of my childhood.
I was really small for my age when I was about ten. We lived in a very poor area and there were a lot of very "ordinary people" around (to be polite). I used to get beat up a lot, being small and being new to the area. I became a good runner. The older boys would get me down and take anything I had.
One day I was playing a space invaders type game at the shop and one of the bullies came in and pushed me around and tried to take my money. He didn't know that my Mum was nearby and she saw it. She walked up and gave the kid a stern talking to...Ha! Who am I kidding...she belted him one...and a real good one. Knocked him on his backside. It was the only sort of language a little punk like him knew. There he was about 15 years old on his butt with my Mum yelling at him.
She told him that if she ever saw him around any of the kids she would come back and get him.She also told him to tell his no good trashy parents that if they had an issue with it, she would call her brother, a SGT in Police, and he might have to come around and pay them some attention.
It was suspected that his parents were thieves and possibly growing weed in their back yard.
He and his mates never bothered me again. I was very embarrassed at the time and very angry at Mum, but later I realised that it was a fight I was never going to win by myself and she was the only friend I really had so I did really need her help. And she was there for me when I needed it.

A few weeks back I was very tired. I had had very little sleep due to the floods and was exhausted. I heard my son Austin wake up crying at about 3 am....He had been sick all through his bed.
I thought of this song when I got up and cleaned up the mess while my wife cleaned up Austin.
I now there will be a day when he won't let me do anything for him or want me to, so for the mean time I just have to cherish those moments with him, good or bad...
