Some very entertaining reading
There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics.
With the advent and widespread use of the "innernets", it is becoming harder and harder for posers, pogues, and wannabe's to perpetuate their fake identities. Between social networking sites like facebook, generic sites like SOCNET, and individual unit web sites, fakes stand little to no chance of maintaining their facade.
These individuals can't grasp how tight knit these types of organizations truly are, nor do they understand how easy it is to spot a fraud. All it takes is ONE picture or ONE name to confirm or deny a claim.
Here's an example from a unit web site where a muldoon is asking about another muldoon that made claims about being in TF Ranger in Somalia. The second response is from a muldoon who actually WAS in TF Ranger and has access to unit manifests, awards docs, etc...
Total time, about 72 hours.February 14th, 2011, 7:15 am
Guys name is Jxxxx Vxxxxx, says he was in Somalia in 93. Also claims HALO, SCUBA and Sniper.
Can anyone verify?

100% full of ****. Not on the list.
Here's one of an Army Guard idiot trying to fake the funk. His claims were destroyed within 24 hours by an active duty member with the appropriate access to personnel records.
Whether making unit claims, awards, or having special skills, it is NOT difficult to find out the truth in todays "information age". Posers who are seen by, or run into, former or active members of special mission organizations WILL be found out, be they civilian OR active service members.July 25th, 2010, 11:43 am
... though he hardly ever wears them is SF Qual, Ranger Qual, Pathfinder, Halo, Scuba, Master Blaster etc......over time I've noticed little changes in this guy's career history (as he tells me)...
anybody know a guy by the name of Bxxx Sxxxx, enlisted circa 85, did some time at x/xx (story changes), did alot of time in group (though the group number changes sometimes, apparently was at Bad Tolz and Lewis). Was an SF baby apparently, Ranger school 87 or 88. If nobody here has heard of him then could someone please pass his name across the street? I suspect that some of this guy's past is very true and some is major embellishment and possible fake badges...

Absolutely!
I remember saluting like that ONCE...first salute rendered to our USMC Drill Instructor at Navy AOCS...at which point my f'd up salute was quickly corrected by our USMC Drill Instructor via vice-like/pancaking hand motions to my f'd up hand...as well as what seemed like 1,000 four count hop-n-pops in sauna-like Pensacola August heat. Dang...I think I'm having flash-backs...

Odd that no one ever asked him for his military ID. I don't know about now, but way back we could fly military standby at about half the fare if we were in uniform, but I still had to show my ID to get it even in full regalia.

Are you talking about the old flight system known as Patriot Express? Commercial Airlines have always been friendly especially American owned companies. They often offer discounts or upgrades to those in military uniform but I have never heard of the standby half off bit.
No. All airlines used to offer service people half price fares if you flew standby. Back then, planes were rarely filled and I never missed a flight. A couple of times I got to sit in first class because that was the empty seat. You had to fly in uniform (class A's) and had to show ID. Also back then though, every major airport had MP's and SP's in them and they were constantly checking ID, leave papers, orders, etc. so this guy would have gotten nailed a long time ago.

The really screwed up thing, is that if the Stolen Valor Act is held to be Freedom of Speech (which IMHO is BS) then we're going to be seeing even more of these turds and not be able to do a damn thing about it.
Guys like this really irk me.

And this is where discretion and judgement come into play, which we are apparently lacking as a society these days.
IMO, there is a pretty clear line that can be easily drawn between free speech and criminal fraud / stolen valor. A muldoon bragging about being on a S.W.A.T. team in a bar, despite not being an LEO, is far different from that same dude doing interviews in his "S.W.A.T." uniform, or gaining some type of significant personal advantage, financial or otherwise, due to his fraudulent claims.
A lot of these posers cross the "B.S. chest thumper free speech" line, and attempt to gain benefits they haven't earned, or try to obtain paid speaking opportunities at places where folks just don't know better. That's where the "stolen valor act" should come into play. These are the idiots that I would support charging criminally. IMO, some court ordered community service cleaning up at VA hospitals might be a good eye opener for these clowns.
