    Army vs. Air Force

Can anyone give me definates about the living standards? Food, room, bed, off-time, etc? Info on the above during BT, AIT, and post AIT would be great.

...To make this post longer- I've been considering the Army a lot(really a lot) but have been advised by lots of people that Air Force is the way to go. They say that the Air Force is easier for women and that Army barracks and living standards are not too great. I just want general info about both.
My experience with the Army and Air Force is that the army recruiter is someone I can respect and admire. Someone I can look up to and make a role model. Someone I want to be like. I have seen an Air Force recruiter only once and he was not someone I could respect. He looked(I really don't want to say this) Lazy. He looked like he hadn't really worked to earn his position. AF supporters, please do not burn me to a crisp. He is the only AF person I have seen, others may be different.

    Info and Advise please...

Depends on what you want to do.

Do you want to hump a ruck, blow stuff up, and shoot alot? Join the Army.

Do you want to have a more normal work schedule and be treated better? Join the Air Force.

If I had to do it again, I would have gone AF. Still serving your country, but being treated like an adult at the same time. The Army was fun sometimes, but it's a tradeoff.

    good luck

USAF basic is 6 weeks, not terribly difficult. The mind games were harder than the physical side of it. Army basic is longer.

AF barracks after basic, 2 per room. My first base ( Malmstrom AFB Montana) had semi private bathrooms, a dayroom on each floor with a TV and a microwave. Hookups in each room for cable tv and a telephone ( cost extra) , assigned parking slots.

Depending on your job interest, a lot of AF jobs are M-F 9-5. I was in the Security Police so we were not included in that schedule.

AF is known to be the slowest in getting promoted.

AF is known to have some of the best technical schools/jobs. Depends on your job.

I have been to MArine bases and the old open bay barracks or 4 to a room barracks were common.

Overall, I think the AF has the best facilities, chow ( been to an Army chow hall and when I was in Korea, the Army troops would find an excuse to be on our base at chow time) , training etc.

In the Army, your FIRST job is to be in the INFANTRY. After that , you do your regular job. AF, selects some to be in a quasi groundpounder type position but mainly to support the SF ( Security Forces) .

I think you know whee I am going with this !!

ANy Army or AF bases nearby for you to take a look at ?

The air force is usually where more women tend to go, i just got out of the army, the living conditions though all depend on the installation u will be assigned to. the air force is usually considered the "high class" military, unless you are going into combat arms, which if u are a female u are not allowed anyways, go into the air force

I know this thread is a little older, I just caught up though. If I were you, I would choose a branch that offers future opportunities. Decide what you want to do as a career and see which one offers the training that you'll need to acheive that goal. I'm not sure how living quarters plays into that, because you always have the option of living off base.

My vote is and will always be Air Force. They offer so much more training for future employment than any other branch (IMO).

Why settle for anything less then the marines, im not sure how you are though. I was thinking that if i went in any other branch i always know i didnt complete the toughest training so i wouldnt feel the best about myself knowing i did something that can be better. Well if you are conserned about living then dont go into the corps. The marines are the friendliest to eachother and get along pretty good.

I agree with DC on the Air Force life. I would love to have my own genie. If Major Nelson did in fact have a genie, why didn't he wish for a promotion or loads of cash? I was always curious about that.

Yes, Gomer Pyle is exactly like most Marines that I know. Goobers.

DC: How do you come up with these things? I would never think of this at all.

(awaiting the smash remarks from our jarhead friends out there!) ;)

DC kind of has it right for the Navy. The Air Force tells you what you CAN do. The Navy tells you what you CANT do. Therefore more leeway.

Instead of going to college ( which I had NO interest in doing) , going in the USAF was the best thing I ever did for myself.

I had just graduated from HS, was17, was interested in Law Enforcement and NOBODY hires anyone under the age of 21 to be an LEO. I didn't want to just "work" , I wanted to get into some kind of LEO work and the military was the best and probably only option.

I travelled all over the world, got a good amount of training, handled all kinds of weapons, learned the chain of command and how to take orders, how to get along with others ( even if you don't like them !) and PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY for my actions.

The military is a GREAT place for a young person to go who wants to learn, serve his/her country and make acareer if so inclined. I got out at age 21 and moved on, it would not have been a bad thing to stay in for 20, I could have retired in 1998 at age 38 !

this reminds me of Full Metal Jacket when they're talking to Animal Mother..." He'll be cool if he has people throwing grenades at him for the rest of his life." That is what the USMC reminds me of.
