This is the same incident that killed my friend.
If you do a little reading on it, you will find that they were working with a somewhat trusted source from the Afghan National Army (ANA). This ANA source had been used in teh past and they are all about trying to instill )bidirectional) trust in these sources. With that said, it is my understanding that the subject was about to be searched when he detonated the device.
The real issue is how this person was able to get so close to several agents in one location prior to this search (one of which is teh regional coordinator). It is my understanding that this FOB used to be a military site but is now relegated to other functions (such as USAID and this other contracting agency with whom these agents were co-located). With it no longer being a military base, the security protocols are very different, if not at least "softer" in appearance, in order to promote a demilitarized appearance/function.
