I also did the Guard route. Undoubtedly, it helped me get in. However, it did so more through character development than anything else. I got two MOSes and then went the ROTC route through the last 2 years of college. I didn't get any VA points for it, but I am sure it was noted during interviews and such. That will not likely be the case these days, as you can count on some deployments with today's current events.
I also think it came in very useful during SOG selection (after already being on the job), as I was already familiar with the head-games and knew some of the shortcuts. FYI, while our academy is NOT very militaristic, SOG selection is.
