Barack Obama has said he considered joining the United States military when he left school but decided not to because the Vietnam war was over and "we weren't engaged in an active military conflict at that point".
Basically, what this man is saying is...he wanted to serve in combat.

It's possible. I'm sure we've all considered LOTS of different things in our lifetime. We spend much more time considering some things than others and choose to not do some for what are probably moronic reasons.

He probably spent all of 2 minutes considering military service.

No, it's true he wanted to join the military. The problem was, though, that with Vietnam over, the Viet Cong were no longer taking recruits.

It could well be true. The only reason Kerry joined and served was for political gain down the road. And he gerryrigged enough purple hearts to get himself out of harm's way after only 4 months, but that was enough. Otherwise, there is no advantage to a future politician to serve in the military.

Unlike Kerry, I was too dumb to go crying for a purple heart on every scratch I received so I had to do the full 13 months.

Yeah, but all those were flash in the pan, not lasting very long. He wouldn't have been out of basic or OCS before they were over.

I'm not defending him at all. But I do believe that people like him see no advantage to military service unless it can benefit them somehow. As I recall, Kerry had served a year already off the coast of Vietnam on a Lt. Cruiser, but that was a nothing tour. He wanted to have the political power that JFK got from his WWII fiasco so he volunteered to go back and he probably already had the clout to get the assignment he wanted.

As far as military service, I have to give Gore the most credit. He took the draft and served as an enlisted man even though he had a Yale education. He did go to Vietnam and the fact he was "looked out for" wasn't really his fault. No one in the Army wanted a Senator's son killed over there. But he did go and there was really no "green zone" anywhere over there. His duty was that of a correspondent, but any enlisted with that kind of education would have gotten something like that. I sure never saw any draftees with Ivy League degrees in the bush. But the point is, if anyone could have wrangled a cushy job in the Pentagon shuffling papers, he could, but he didn't. I despise his politics and his agendas, but I do think that was a stand up thing to do.
