    Army CID

I'm currently in college with two years left before graduation. I've been thinking a lot about what exactly I wanted to do afterwards with the many options that I have. I wanted to see what others think about what I have settled on doing. I've always wanted to join the military before getting a job in civilian LEO. I've been looking a lot at the army CID. So I'm going to join the army with the MOS of MP and after completing my 6 months hopefully can get into the CID. I know if I get in I have to serve in it for three years which I will probably want to do longer if I really like it before hopefully getting a job outside the military. I have a couple of questions though. How difficult is it to get into the CID? Also, can I get written into my contract that after I serve 6 months in MP that I will able to join a CID unit? I'm not sure of this but in the army you can sign up for only two years right. That way if I don't get into the CID I can look in the civilian sector. I feel this is an opportunity not only for me to get good work experience and training, but also accomplish two goals almost at once. Being in the military and serving my country, but also if I get into the CID being able to investigate crime.

Don't believe your recruiter is what I hear from military people. They will promise you the world if it will get you to sign on.

Don't believe a word your recruiter says. He's not your buddy, you're just another potential number for his monthly "mission"(quota). Sounds harsh I know, but it's true.

check out this site if you want more info.

There are some ex-MP's in the Academy with me right now, and they've pretty much said being an MP hasn't helped them to much on the civilian side as far as getting hired.

MP enlistment is 5 years. :D
If you decide to go through it via enlistment you will eventually get into CID if you have the qualifications and patience. The first thing to do once at your duty station is to talk to the person in charge of recruitment in the CID office. They will give you the best course of action to get in. What will happen is that once you serve 6 months in an MP capacity the CID office will request you from your company. Your company CO will be the one that will decide whether he will sign you off or not. My wife had to wait for her CO to allow her into CID. Our experience wasn't so great, since MPs are in short supply, her CO would not sign off.
If I were you, I would get in contact with the CID office before signing up anywhere and find out from them what would your best course of action should be. http://www.cid.army.mil/
Oh, and like the others have said, make sure everything is on paper before even putting your signature on it.
Best of luck and let me know how it goes.

Thank you Madpup. Before I go into civilian LE I want to be in CID first. I want to get some good work experience before I try to hopefully get a job with a federal agency. I have several family members in the military so I've been told plenty about the recruiters. The main reason for me wanting to be an MP is so I can get the chance to get into CID. I've been thinking about this for a few years now.

    Misconception

There is a big misconception that getting into CID requires you to be an MP. That is not even close. From the outside, logic would tell you that the MP corps makes up recruitment pool, but that is not true either. CID looks for potential recruits from a wide variety of MOS's. Personally, I think you would be better off, going into something else that interests you and is not currently short handed. MP's are short handed right now and getting released to go CID could be very difficult. More and more enlisted personnel have degrees nowadays so you must come to the plate with more than that to be marketable.

MPs are currently being deployed heavily. 16 friends/people that attend this college just came back when their mp unit was rotated out.
