Anyone have intimate knowledge of these CID-type people? Not carnal knowledge, mind you.
I know a guy who knows a guy, who might be me that's contemplating this line of work and would be interested to get 1st-hand intel.

Of every one hundred men, ten should not even be here. Eighty are nothing but targets. Nine are real fighters, and we are lucky to have them, for they make the battle. Ah, but the One... One of them is a Warrior... He will bring the others back.

What do you want to know? USACID works felony-level crimes for the Army. I don't work for them, but work for a similar agency for a different service branch, so I might be able to answer some general questions. Other than that, the best bet it to call up a USACID office (vice a regular Army recruiter) and get the skinny directly from the source.
Are you contemplating active-duty, reserve, or National Guard?

Not necessarily. While some protective service operations (PSO) positions are full-time (PSA for a principle, working at a protective services detachment location overseas, etc.), most are augmented by regular agents who help with the PSO when the principle travels to their area. MCIO's (USACID, NCIS, AFOSI, etc.) don't have the numbers or resources of Secret Service, so we have to do "more with less." At least that's how it works for us, but it's my understanding that the same is true for USACID and AFOSI.
PSO's aren't a bad gig to change things up every know and then, but I could definitely see how it would get real old real quick if you did it full-time for a long period of time. I've done a couple PSO's, and I'm just a regular gun-totin', case investigating agent.

I would assume then, that CID agents get a decent amount of training?

I have worked 3 cased with USACID. I have never seen a bigger soup sandwich. And I have dealt with 3 different offices each time. I will take DCIS any time. I am not going to agency bash, but the mistakes I have seen made are not even mistakes. They are intentional, deliberate, and not the way 99% of federal LE agencies operate. Some might even question the legality of things said, done and promised. I had one case indicted and then dropped by the US-DOJ-USOA's Office due to one stunt a CID guy pulled with a lawyered up perp. Another case the JAG mandated them off the case and as a "witness roll" only and the other they may be off soon as they can't seem to understand you need proof what you say happened, and that your hunch is not enough to get somebody charged.
-In God we trust. All others, put your hands on the car and don't move.
I've got no clue how they operate. Inside the military, as a military investigator would be brand new to me. Operating within the confines of the UCMJ has got to be much different than the street-level police work I'm used to.
This is off their website: "CID does not charge subjects of investigations with crimes. CID investigates allegations of wrongdoing and once an investigation is completed, turns the findings over to the appropriate command and legal authority for disposition and adjudication."
Is DCIS an 1811 position? I see they're OIG investigators and no positions are open.
Maybe for CID it's better that I've got civvie experience?

Recruiters are persistant son's of cane's. If you call them they will want your name, DOB, address, phone number, and want to come to your house to talk to you and call you everyday just to see how you are doing, when they really don't care about you they just want you to sign up!If I know anything, its about that.

Look at my profile, son. I already did time in the Marines. ;)

Very well then. I tried joining the Marines. As well as the Army, and Army National Gaurd. Apparently they won't accept kids who have had surgery on their ear drums, due to the fact of my elevated risk of hearing loss/damage.
Do you still have any friends enlisted or in good terms with the military, perhaps a Surgeon General?![]()

Before removing the mote from thy neighbors eye; attend to a beam of thine own.
PSU was a pretty good Op. I know they have been hiring 1811's under the name "Pentagon Force Protection, Office of Protective Services". A huge amount of travel is involved, as one would expect. Their Principals are who you would expect working at that location - but there are the VERY boring aspects as well: Halls and Walls and Residence Watch.
JoeyD brought up a very valid point CIDC does practice some pretty backassward IP's. Dealing with the JAG offices is no fun at all and the politics in the military - don't go there. Confusing rank with authority is a big problem and one of the primary reasons I left the MP Corps for another MOS. Although CID is pretty much maintained as an outside entity - there is always someone to answer to that has Stars on their shoulders or in their eyes.
