    Navy Rserve ???

I am in the process of getting in the Navy reserve as a Intelligence Specialist down in Southern COmmand. Any one know what the heck I will be doing? Also will I get deployed faster then a normal ship job?

What will I get paid as a E-5 for a drill weekend?

I was attached to SOUTHCOM from 95-98, went with the move to Miami. Worked with a lot of Navy guys and can say that the only time I saw a ship was the cruise lines. Now going deployed I was on some small fast attack and CNT/CT riverine Opns boats with SBU-26/ST 8 and some USMC teams but that was within the scope of Opns with SOCSOUTH. Not sure what shop you will be part of; J1,2,3,4,etc as I do not know your specialty. Being the command element a lot of work will be within the specialty of the Chairborne Corps! SOUTHCOM is an awesome command if you do get to deploy, Central and South America and the Caribbean's...Sweet. Now don't get me wrong, we did work alot!

    Cheers

Were you there full time or just the reserves? I have been in the building in the past but not sure what they do. Also what did you mean what shop? What does each shop do? Will it be interesting chair work or just pushing papers? Also I take it my 2 weeks during the summer for annual training will be held in south com or can I go other places? I have no clue what to expect.

I really enjoyed SOUTHCOM, unfortunately I couldn't get orders there as a MA (just a couple of deployments). Panama City and Cartagena, Colombia are probably some of the best places in the world for liberty.

Watch out though because you might do like I did and come back married :-D .

I conducted Counter Narco-Terrorism operations, served on a personal protective mission, and other duties - as assigned. I was an active duty Army, non-commissioned officer. As for the "shops' that I mentioned, I was referencing the directorates; Plans, training, and mobilization, security (Intelligence - DISA/CISO/etc, logistics, special assistance, Office of the Commander-in-Chief, Political, Legal, Public Affairs, Marine Forces South, SOC South, etc.

SOUTHCOM has a pretty huge mission so I cannot guess what they may have in store for you. I am running with the guess that you are a FAM? If that is the case you may want to get in contact with the Commander-in-Chief's protective service detachment, they are (in my time) a pretty good group, did some high speed training, and had a great mission. I know there are a few FLEO billets within the command but cannot be sure what the involvement is today nor can I clarify to much other than it is a HUGE counter-narco operation.

I deployed a lot to the big Coco countries and spent time jungle hopping with various Latin SpecOps conducting sweep and clear opns. There is a big Intelligence section, ground based radar sites in the middle of "nothingness". Occasionally there were rescue ops, looking for planes that didn't want to yield to the USAF.

    Hope my rambling helps....Cheers.

I doupt I will be doing any high speed work since I will be in the Navy again and no longer the Army. I wanted to get back into the reserves but did not want to be a MP and get activated to Iraq. I tried that Air Force but they wanted nothing to do with me. So since the Navy had this cool job and they would let me keep my E5 and also a 20 grand bonus I thought I better do it.

I was active duty in the Navy for 3 years, then 6 years as a MP in the Army reserve and it looks like back to the Navy reserve for 6 years.

20,000 Bonus??? Holy crap! For that kind of money I think I would give great consideration to wearing pants with my last name stitched on the back pocket too!

Allowing you to keep your E-5 is a pretty good incentive as well, you will not have to pick up too much sh*t work, that is always a good thing. You didn't mention (or I missed it) your military specialty, I am guessing (as I was never in the reserves) that will dictate where they are going to place you when you are "active". The positive thing about a HQ Command element in a joint service environment is that there will be some latitude for you if your Navy POC allows for this.
If you have any experience in the SpcOps community you may want to try to contact the Opns NCO for SOCSOUTH, this may get you a short term deployment down in South America, always a cool place to visit.
I had some great experience with the intelligence community down there as well, depending on your current clearance this may be an option.
Let me know how things are going, I always will treasure my time with that command.

    Cheers.

Well I have my MEPs next week. Can't wait to turn around and spread my cheeks!

I just hope this job is cool down in southcom. Also I pray I don't get sent overseas right away.

Anyone know how long the Navy reserves spend on deployment? Will it be 14 months like the Army?

As deployments go there are not a lot of long term operations in a forward deployed area if you are attached to HQ/HQ Command USSOUTHCOM. There are contingency operations at every Embassy in the Defense Attachés Office or the MilGrp's. They have ground based radar sites throughout the AOR - remote locations - jungle time! There were forward operation Joint Task Force units in Hondo, Panama, and a few other countries. Again, this is a crap shoot, where you will go will depend on the needs of the command. The length of your "active" reserve status and security clearance will play a factor as well.

As an E-5 with over eight years you will make $356.12 a drill weekend.

Military Pay Tables Check for 2009 rates.

The standard deployment is now 12 months boots on the ground with training and debrief on either side. There are deployments for shorter length; they are typically the ones you volunteer for (Individual Augmentee).

For some reason I will get E-5 with 17 years. Recruiter told me that they count all time including IRR for only pay purposes.

I am a Reserve MA, but do not have much experience with prior enlistments since I am on my first. I have 5 years in though, so give it a shot.
