Military Police transfer to Civilian Law Enforcement

States' that will allow Military Police experience to qualify in lieu of attending a POST academy.

The below states listed will accept Military Police training to qualify for a shortened, equivalency of training program instead of attending a regular police academy to become certified in the respective state. The streamlined programs are usually 2-3 weeks in duration and cover law and high liability areas.

*** Other conditions in the transfer may include years of MP service and civilian education. It should be also noted that some departments within these states do not recognize Military Police equivalency when it comes to hiring these newly certified officers. In this circumstance, when hired, the new officer may still be required to attend a state approved basic police training program. Check the requirements of the department in which you are seeking employment. ***

    -Alabama: APOSTC (http://216.226.177.69/waiver.htm)

    -Florida: FDLE (http://www.spcollege.edu/ac/eot.htm)

    -Minnesota: MN POST (http://www.post.state.mn.us/military%20reciprocity.asp)

    -New Mexico: APD (http://www.apdonline.com/requirements/lateral.html)

    -Texas (http://info.sos.state.tx.us/pls/pub/...=7&ch=219&rl=2)

Time served as Military Police may also count as "specialized experience" when applying to federal, uniformed police agencies - as GS-0083 Police Officer - such as Veterans Affairs Police or Department of the Army Civilian Police.

This has been brought up a few times in the past. I thought a sticky would be helpful.

At least as far as AL is concerned, that's not an absolute truth. I went through an APOST academy with an Army MP (active, then National Guard) who still had to attend an APOST academy. Not sure if it was the department's policy, or something else, but I'd advise anyone who is a MP/MA/SF to inquire with both the state P.O.S.T. commission and the department(s) they are interested in before assuming they can skip an academy.

Will most departments take 4 years MP or will they also require at least an associates degree?

Zombie post brother. Military time - as long as it is honorable on the DD 214 with a 1A re entry is good time.

It depends on what you did as a MP. Combat support or LEA? I went through a lot of the SpecOps courses for the MP's at USAMPS. All were very top notch courses. Some agencies will take a better look if you have qualities that they need due to the fact that some agencies put their people through USAMPS courses and recognize the quality. If you spent your 4 years riding a gate at an arms depot...not alot of LEO experience will be gained there.

Good luck, keep your nose clean, and never quit.

    Cheers

No it wouldn't. I retired from there. It's become a left wing, nut case city. The unofficial city motto is "Keep Portland Weird".

When I started there in 1970, it was nice city, but the housing boom in California sent a bunch of nut cases up here from L.A. and San Francisco. Also, the state closed one mental hospital and quit providing funding for a lot more. As a result, Portland is full of homeless mentally ill people that the public expects the police to deal with.

Some of the suburban cities pay as well and don't have the leftist city council Portland has.

But to refer to the title of this post, military experience doesn't get you out of any training, it's just in the initial hiring that it helps.

Man, how little did I know. I just thought it looked pretty from the plane when I flew into there once. I'll make sure I stay away.
