Congrats from a former Marine..why so long until you go to the island? I walked into a recruiter in April 92 and was riding a bus into the front gates of P.I. in July 92( and let me tell you it almost feels like you are going to prison...you know there is no turning back...you do your time and then you'll be "released") I served with an M.P. unit at Lejeune during my last 6 months in (FAP). It was base M.P.'s and I was an 03 Infantry but they started up a "front gate platoon" and I was an NCO so I basically learned to supervise other M.P.'s despite not having a 5800 MOS...anyway long story...by the time you leave for boot camp you will get plenty of advice form here but basically get in the best shape you can and stay out of trouble while in the DEP. DEAD HANG PULLUPS if you cant do 20 now, get crackin' I had to get 1st class pft to get meritorious corpral and to get the pullups i had to use ADDED WEIGHT i recommend 12 sets of 1 with weight attatched to start, when u can do 12 sets of 3 with weight, add weight, then back to 12 sets of one and so on. after 4 evolutions max out your dead hang pullup and see if you can get 20. Not everyone can just bangem out. I weighed 205 and got 19 perfect dead hang pullups using this method. If your gym doesnt have an aparatus for this, use a back pack and add weight. My one rep max including bodyweight was 300lbs. (2 45lb weights + a five) you can also use a 5-10 lb weight to help on your crunches. Dont use treadmill for your run. Itll hurt in the long run. you gotta run on concrete and try to get used to 3.5 miles so the 3 wont hurt. I wish i had someone tell me this before i went in, i went from 215 down to 165 in basic, and i wasnt fat, just muscles in wrong places. take care of yourself.

    lfpdlieu302,
Holy Sh*t!!! I might know you. I was in 2/2 WPNS Co and when 2/2 got back from Haiti I didn't want to extend and live on ship for the 6 month Med float they were going on so I got sent to 1/2 and went back to Oki for 6 months. I ended up in Charlie Co WPNS platoon. When we got back from Oki I was a short timer and wanted a FAP to the base MP's to look good on a resume when I got out...and some how (I'll still truly believe it was divine intervention) I not only got a FAP but it was to the M.P.'s...do you know how many people had to sign off on that!!! The Sgt. Major had to run it by the B.C. and then the base M.P.'s had to chose me from all the other FAP's....I could go on and on about how much of a miracle I still think that FAP was...unbelievable 7+ yrs. later:D

i know this is gonna sound weird, but i got to 2/2 right after they came back from haiti also. transfered to 1/2 and left right before they left for oki!! i helped em pack. if you ever went to admin (where i worked) you would know me as the infamous pay clerk/ grunt!! i'm trying to remember my gunny's name, rosario i think. did you know a guy named afonso? i trained him to take my spot when i left. small world huh?

btw esprit, this is something that you will one day expereince, the fact that marines are such a small unit, you are bound to know one or been stationed with one at some point or another!

I think I remember a Gunny Rosario. I am sure I probably was in the same room with you at one point or another when I visited admin before the Oki trip. I know I had to go to admin a few times when getting transferred from 2/2 to 1/2. I sometimes wish I had extended and seen the Med. I actually had a friend who I went to SOI with and we spent 2 yrs in 2/2, went to Oki and Haiti, then we went to 1/2 and went to Oki and Korea and then when he got back he actually went back to 2/2 and went on the Med float!!! This guy had a sea service deployment ribbon with 3 stars on a 4 yrs enlistment!!! I had a series GySgt from Parris Island who after his time there actually was sent to 2/2 and became a platoon sgt. (he was a staff sgt who was filling a series gunn billet at P.I.) so you are right about running into the same Marines at different duty station. I actually saw my senior drill instuctor when I was getting out and it was really weird seeing him four yrs. later.

    More Advice

    Corps,
The advice you've gotten so far is great. I would also add that you should work on learning everything you possiblely can before you get to the Island (Its easier to learn it at home rather than there. It also shows "planning ahead" and will impress the Drill Instructors). Get with your recruiter and get anything he has and MEMORIZE it. Know your General Orders - word for word. Be able to recite them from memory (When asked "What is your first General Order" start out with, "Sir, the private's first General Order is..." And sound off as loudly as you possiblely can).
Learn the ranks structures (all services). I also got a small booklet from a local Army National Guard unit (my older brother was the commader) on the M-16. Learn all the facts of the weapon. Again - know it by heart.
I was down there in "78. I got nailed one day after we just got our D.I.s when he thought I was screwing off. He asked me all the General Orders. Thank God I knew them (but not the Sir, the private's first General order is...). I'm sure this is part of the reason I got meritoriously promoted out of boot camp.
Good luck and if you have any other questions, shoot me an e-mail and I'll try to help out.
