You can (as a Reservist) volunteer for Iraq / Afghanistan as an Individual Augmentee. The time spent overseas will vary by assignment. If you are involuntarily activated, you are now looking at 365 days in the sandbox, not door to door. Any traiining a Reservist needs to do will be in addition to the 365 day.
Obtaining your Associates degree in four years is doable, but it will depend on the sailor. Your primary responsibility is your navy job, not your education. I have not been activated so I cannot speak for how much time you will have available to do your schoolwork, but the services do have their own college (whose name escapes me right now

) as well as partnering with various educational facilities stateside. You are likely to be going on limited sleep some days to get it done.
There is a new rate that formed up that may be what you are looking for. I can't recall the rate, but it is more towards the brown water (think Viet Nam) and port patrols. Several of the MAs at my Reserve Center (Navy Operational Support Center) are trying to switch over to it. My stuff is 2000 miles away or I would get the info. It may be worth looking into as it is more combat related than MA.
Good luck.
I think I know what your talking about, are you sure it's a rate all by it's self?
