    ARMY ROTC Background check?

Does anybody know how long it takes for the Army to do a background check on a person?

I've personally seen it take over two years. The people who have not had their clearances approved normally have issues that need to be resolved. The agencies and contractors doing these checks are very busy and some are overwhelmed. Interim clearances are given out much faster, because it is based on a cursory review of the case. A "cursory review" can take as long as six months to a year depending on the case and investigation being conducted.

So to answer your question, it depends on the situation.
But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same object, evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new guards for their future security.

Translation for the intellectually challenged: If the government screws the people too much, it is the right and duty of the people to revolt and form a new government.

A Secret clearance takes just a few months, I would say the average is 3 to 6. TS/SCI clearances are going to take 1-2 years. The adjudication takes a while and that is why the long time frame.

I am not sure if you are referring to a clearance or not. I am unaware of any background check that is done for anything other than a security clearance but I wasn't ROTC so I don't know their ways. Anyway, you won't be getting a TS/SCI while not actually active duty. Once you go active duty, you may or may not get a TS/SCI. Depends on your MOS and the billet that you fill.

From what I understand, all clearances given to cadets are interim, since the cadet will be receiving his or her clearance following their commission. I'm not positive about this, since I am prior service and already have my clearance, but I believe this to be the case.

I don't think he's talking about a security clearance, i think he means just the local background check that's required. Local background checks are required for admission to ROTC, and for enlistment. From my understanding you will NOT obtain a security clearance in ROTC because you will not have access or the need to view/know any classified information.

Usually it's not long at all, for a local check expect 1-3 months depending on the area you're from.

If you ARE talking about security clearances - Secret takes 3-7 months, TS/SCI takes 6-24 months. Depending on all sorts of issues

mpower - I don't know about Army, but in the USCG all cadets recieve a final Secret clearance after their 1st year (or whatever they call it), then if they get kicked out it gets pulled.

Because the point of ROTC is to become a Commissioned Officer, you will need a Secret Clearance. Or, they may just be determining if you look eligible for an SC. Since an SC is required for CO, this may have something to do with it. Yes, there is a very basic background to join the military, period.

Mine took a year or two. Meanwhile, they might grant you a (temp. one). Don't sweat it. If you told them about all your traffic tickets, etc. You should be fine. Just stay out of trouble now, and don't sweat it.

do they still run background checks even though your already on active service.. I have a buddy who had some misdemeanors and minor possession charges when he was a minor, but they didn't find it on any of the background checks he had when he first joined.. but he's a bit worried that they eventually will.. any help you be appreciated..

They probably did find out about them, however, unless it meets the criteria for a secondary interview with his particular clearance level and job, they won't follow up. Especially if the offenses occurred before he turned 18. Now if he upgrades a clearance or changes jobs, he may be screwed.

The backlog is gone, so your TS / SCI clearances are down to a few months.

My daughter started out enlisted but picked up a Project SOAR scholarship from the USAF.

The ROTC background took a few months, but when she went into ICBM's it took nearly two years for what I am assuming was TS. Her tech school lasted a year, and she worked as a Deputy Combat Crew Commander for maybe six months under a waiver before the clearance was fully awarded and she was eligible for Combat Crew Commander.

I am not sure if the FBI did the background, a contract investigator or the OSI, but I do know it was extensive with neighbors and some of her school teachers were interviewed. They did not speak with me, but I know they made an inquiry with my PD about me.
This career is not a sprint, it is a marathon.

From my experience, the timeline varies on the individuals background. Personally I am closer to 40, lived in dozens of countries, and have worked with foreign governments as a contractor. A TS for me is going to take a long time. A person fresh out of college, had "basic" jobs, and not moved around much won't take as long.

    Cheers

The Security clearance they are talking about happens at the end of your 2nd year (Sophomore) i think with the intent of getting it back before they would "Waste" money on sending someone who can't get the clearance to Advanced Camp (between 3rd and 4th year). that was my experence but that was also 10 years ago.
unfortunately off the street, but working on a 2-Year CJ Degree (40% Finished).

Yea though I walk through the valley of no radio reception, with backup in excess of 40 miles away I shall fear no evil, for I am a warrior, for whom the ranchers have an affinity, and they can take the head off a gopher at 200 yards.
