    SWORN Military Police Officer?

I was at some silly meeting a few weeks ago and some G2 type stood up and said his unit had transitioned to "sworn military police officers." What's up with that? I'm an old fart and not in the Army since the 70s, but Ft. Gordon didn't have that term decades ago. Why does someone appointed to an MP position now need an additional oath beyond the oath of enlistment? Used to be there were two ways to become an MP. Join the MP Corps, or be ordered to perform MP duties by your C.O. Has that all changed? What's up with the sworn?

boyce, are you in Augusta now? I'm from Augusta myself. From the statement of "transitioned to sworn" baffles me a little. Not up to par with how the army does it, but they do have an MP school. I could see someone saying they are sworn, but mainly due to the fact they attended the MP school. Unless it's something new, I've not heard of military police or security forces (air force) going to state academies. However some states my acknowledge the military police training and allow them to persue off base for something of high nature that occurred on base and the subject was fleeing. But even in the Air Force while at Edwards AFB , California, we were allow to persue off base via approval from the shift supervisor. We would not make contact with the subject but would more or less tail them until civilian authorities to stop them. I also know that the Marines would send MP's to Palm Springs during spring break to deal with the marines there. Maybe the transitioning part is some small technicality they have overcame and giving a little more leeway.

When I was acitve duty, we were allowed to pursue off base as long as we started it on base. Of course , we let the local PD have them first if they wanted them for anything. Typically, they would just hand them over to us.
