Stop in and say hi when your passing through, I always have a cold kokanee in the fridge!!
I think it's great that we have an elite group like this that can be utilized in an extremely sticky situation. The military is still very well trained, despite the fact that the numbers aren't large.

That was a really interesting article thanks for posting it. If I remember rightly about seven or eight years ago Canada sent civil police to Haiti to assist in training. They came from various forces in Quebec obviously due to the need to speak French in Haiti.

Yes, many members from the RCMP and the QPP went over, doesnt appear that it had a lasting effect!!Originally Posted by oscarmitre

Ah RCMP as well - so it was, in effect, a military as well as policing presence.![]()

Oscar, I am curious as to how you know what you do about Canadians...don't take that the wrong way, I think it is great. I just, to be honest, know very little about Australia due to the fact that we get almost zero news other than who won the latest rugby match between you and the All Blacks. I think it was you as well who knew of Chris Braiden (who is actually in the running for new Chief of Police for the EPS)...I am just curious because I think it is cool.

Happy to explain (BTW I really hope Braiden gets the job).
I have been lucky enough to visit Canada a few times (but I still haven't visited the Maritimes or Toronto so I am looking forward to organising that trip). Last trip was to Regina and a friend from Regina Police organised a visit to the RCMP Academy (Canada should be proud of it - world class facilities and training programme).
And my Significant Other is from New Westminster BC (she used to be a court reporter and then worked as a para-legal for various law firms in Vancouver -including H.A.D. Oliver if anyone knows him.) but I met her here in Australia.

I didn't know you had travelled here, but I do remember you mentioning your wife being from Canada. Good to know.
Braiden is supposedly one of ten applicants for the job including internal and external people. With the respect that Braiden has, I wouldn't be surprised at all if he does become the new Chief, but then again, I don't know who else has applied as it isn't public knowledge.

The thing with this is that we are sending the best soldiers to Haiti, all nine of them. These guys are the best, but come on only nine?! I guess they figure if the US is sending 50 marines then 9 is all we need.

I was in RCMP Canadian college for a course in 1998 and I met an officer from Gatineau Police(Quebec) that went to Haiti to teach their National Police!!!! I can tell you that he was greatly affected by what he saw down there... I told us horror story that made me chill and at the same time appreciate our police protection in North America. Human Rigths does'nt mean much down there according to him... He went for a 6 months exchange and said he would never go back....
As for the elite group.... Nice to see that we have something to be proud of in that Army... I'd rather spend 500 millions dollars in renewing tha army then into politician pocket that steals us like they did for the past year with that "commandite scandal" and National gun registery (what a useless thing!)
I do think that US and Canada will work more together now that Chretien is gone... ! Good thing !!!
And lets hope that after this next election Martin will be gone too!

They are starting to squirm, but I don't see the conservatives getting in just yet.
