This is a post which is no doubt going to generate a lot of controversy on this forum.
The reason I am posting this is because I am trying to gather some people together from Michigan, hopefully from the Metro Detroit area (it’s going to require meetings) who would be willing to form a group of people for the purpose of petitioning one or more of our state legislators to change a lot of the current laws in this state regulating security and police.
One law, which I’m sure everyone on here can agree with is to introduce legislation to make it a capital offense punishable by death anytime anyone kills a police officer. This has already been tried, but this was the only law that was attempted to be amended. What I want to do is create an all in one inclusive bill that will include many other things that need to be changed.
One thing I’m sure everyone on here is aware of is how bad the economy is in this state. As a result, (this is where the controversy is going to start) I think the laws regulating the rights and authority of police reservists need to be changed, giving them full police authority, of course only while on duty; (something similar to what the NYPD have done with their auxiliary officers, the only thing is we also need to arm them) and also change the law so that the private security police certification in this state would be a lot easier for security companies to obtain and also allow contract security companies to be able to have it.
The truth of the matter is this state is in terrible financial shape. By doing this (this is where I’m going to seriously get flamed on this message board) it would allow small municipal governments to contract out there police services to security companies. A lot of small municipal police agencies in this state are being eliminated because of administrative costs and the costs associated with unions. A lot of private security agencies can do the same job, a lot cheaper and still pay the officers the same rate they were earning working for the city.
A lot of the smaller municipal governments that have eliminated their police services have contracted the services out to their county sheriff’s offices which in a lot of cases are already strained and as a result creates greater response times and other problems. By allowing security companies this option not only would it allow the smaller municipal governments the ability to keep their police, it may also allow other municipal governments the ability to hire their own police.
I think another thing that needs to be done is to change the law to allow police officers (like in most states) the ability to hire out their powers and authorities to security firms and work off duty hours in a security capacity and make arrests and etc under their badge.
This is not an idea I’m wanting to debate on here. I can only imagine the kind of interesting responses I’m going to get from people in regards to this and don’t really care.
I’m looking for people in the metro Detroit area that are willing to form a group/lobby and start lobbying someone to change the laws to allow this. If we can’t find someone who is currently elected to introduce legislation to allow these changes, then we need to sponsor someone and have them elected to get the laws changed.
This is not something that’s going to happen overnight, it may take a couple of years to accomplish.
I do have some experience with political organizations and am willing and ready to put it to use, I just need people and man power to get it done.
