..Now what do you do?Got to go to work, but you hate the job.Hate it.Despise it.
Most of it's in your head. You just cant get up for the job anymore.
You don't want to hear anymore people complaining.
You don't want to worry about the bosses giving you complaints.
You start drinking too much. You're fighting with your family because you're upset about your job,but you can't quit.
So how do you act? You might take it out on the public. You might take it
    out on the job itself.
Some guys go out there and try to do nothing.
    They say,"i'll F$%#& this job!"
They just do nothing unless the sgt. actually orders them.
I know about them. There is people out there like this.
There were a lot more years ago.

I for one will pass. I get tired (jealous) of hearing about old timers in the hot years doing things that I'll never get to do and not having to write any paper behind them... ;)

I read the book when it was in hardback ;)

I really suspect that it may have been one of the ideas from which the tv show "Cops" came from, which showed up soon thereafter.

There were some written by Connie Flemming around the same time, I believe entitled "What Cops Know" and variations thereon. I have them in boxes right now, so I can't physically check.

The best book ever is "The Godfather," "Dune", or "Lord of the Rings."

"The Choirboys" by Joseph Wambaugh. I knew some cop that was just like each of the characters in the book.

His first few books, "The Onion Field", "The New Centurians" and "The Blue Knight" were great, I thought. I could relate to a lot of the people and the stories. Later on he started writing like a fiction writer and not a cop. I got about 2 chapters into his last one and threw it down.

"What Cops Know" was okay, but I already knew that stuff......:D:

When I worked uniform, my partner and I used to carry a S&W CO2 pellet pistol in the car just for senseless vandalisms...

Know what one can do the the door of a drug dealer's Rolls Royce?:D

He wrote more like an old, tired fiction writer than a young, hungry fiction writer. The Oracle reminded me of Michael Conrad in Hill Street Blues - except he was fat.

I just picked up "The Golden Orange" by Wambaugh a few months ago. I'm pretty sure it was on the B&N discount table. Do you know if its worth reading?

I've gotten hooked on Brad Thor Novels for now, so it will be a while before I pick it up. I'd like to know if I should just shuttle it into the "donate to Library" box in the garage... ;)

Moving the house around has the advantage of reminding you of the books you've bought in the past and never even picked up before you buy more...

I think he was beginning to think he was Ernest Hemmingway or something. Each of his last several books got more and more into character development. That's okay to some extent, but he was still doing it in the third chapter. Time to get on with the story already!
