My Father's Gun

I first saw the short TV adaptation of this book on the History Channel a few years ago and it compelled me to read the book. The book made me think a lot of why we become who we are. The book is the memoirs of the author, Brian McDonald. He does a great job providing an easy to read history of his family member careers in the NYPD spanning three generations.

If you ever wondered what it was like to be a police officer, in particular, an officer in New York City, you will find My Father's Gun hard to put down.

It's a great read, I made a thread about it a couple months ago, but not too many people were interested.

Here's my opinion;

In my opinion it was one of the best books I've ever read and was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone in my family, excluding my little sister who didn't read it.

I thought the documentary was the best "show" I've ever seen on television, and will be asking for it for Christmas.

I've finally sat down and watched the whole documentary as well, which was great, prior to that I saw the documentary, but only at parts so while I watched the whole thing it was not continuous.

I highly recommend sitting down and watching the whole documentary and read the book.

While the author never became a cop, I thought it also showed why it seems like a lot of cops kids want to become cops as well.

I could relate to certain aspects of the book as the son of a cop.

I think if you have the chance to read this book you should, even if you're not interested in police work or law enforcement. It's a great read.

I just read it during my Thanksgiving and Winter break from college. Great read and in knowing a lot of cops, I agree with you that it really captured them and their job.

This book actually inspired me to apply with the NYPD.
