Who pays to attend the academy???

Hi... I was just on another police forum site, and someone had posted a PDF link to different police academies and their schedules. I noticed that there was a tuition for each one of them. Does this mean that, if hired, a recruit has to pay their way through the academy?? Or, are they just showing the cost that the department would pay?? Another thing I thought of is perhaps its additional training, but it clearly says for police academies for recruits or ccandidates. It doesn't make sense that the an officer would be paid a salary through the academy, but also has to pay tuition to attend. I'm a bit confused!

    Thank you.

Depends on the state. In Oregon, there are no private academies. You have to be hired and the department not only pays your tuition, but pays you while you attend. In some, you have to foot the bill, get paid nothing and then try to get hired.

It wasn't until I got on my first police forum that I discovered it was different elsewhere.

In Florida the main way to get into LE is to go to a self sponsored academy, take the state exam on your own (and not to mention your own dime), and then apply. Most agencies require the test to have been passed before they'll even look at you (and you can only sit for the test if you've taken and successfully passed an academy).

Wow, didn't know how this when it comes to the academy. Anybody know how it is for IL?? I live in IL, which is why I posted it here. My hometown PD's site says that when they test, the candidate has to go through the battery of tests (written application, physical agility, written / civil, polygraph, psychological, background, medical check, etc), then successfully complete a ten week academy. Does that sound like the academy would be paid for by them?? Upon completion of that, there is a twelve week field training program. Overall, anyone know what the standards are for IL??

Sounds like they pay for it if they do all the testing first. As just said, you should ask them.
