Life is so not fair...

So I was talking to one of our local volunteer firefighters tonight (who is living out of the firehouse btw) and he tells me he makes about $1000.00 every two weeks on unemployment.

I bust my ass at two different jobs working double shifts and short shifts and I make about $900 or so every two weeks.

I must like the job because I'm really selling myself short in life...

Yeah, but 1. Unemployment eventually runs out, and 2. I doubt you have the same type of work ethic, especially if he is homeless, living on the town dole as well.

He should have thanked you for your support.

Lord - an Unemployment Ranger. Feel your pain, I work two full time jobs as well, alway a little tired, chew on WAY too many Tums (but hey, the calcium is good), and would love to spend more time with the kids. But I am also not one to accept help when I can do for myself. If I fall I will accept a hand up but I don't want crutches for a month.

I agree. I have never collected unemployment personally, not that there hasn't been times between jobs where I would have liked to. I was brought up by two parents who bust their ass for all they have and therefore I have taken on the same trait. Unfortunately I think as a result I put work first and that's not good for your personal life...

And Sam yeah that was real blow too (no pun intended).

Greg you need to come to Texas! We can get you hitched, feed you, and employ you! And I almost forgot, we have places you can drive the old goat. Be Safe.

We've tried to tell Greg that there are places that pay real money to do this job, but he doesn't want to leave where he's at......

Greg, probably won't make you feel any better, but you've got company - I've been passed over twice in the last year for a coveted position. Each time by someone with less time on and lesser qualifications (they were "qualified" in other areas)...

Steve: I'm not interested in getting hitched but the rest sounds tempting

RDS is right. I like this area and there is money to be made if you end up in the right place. There is just a ton of competition when those positions open, plus you have to deal with the politics. I am unfortunate in that I don't know any politicians and like they say it's not what you know it's who you know.

Suzanne I am appreciated where I work but they just don't have alot of money, it isn't like they are holding out. Even my Chief makes only around $17 an hour. That whole area is pretty poor.

I don't expect to make an astronomical amount of money but it'd be nice to at least be in the mid 30's or 40's a year....

This is probably going to come off all liberal bleeding heartish but I felt compelled to write this.

I think for most, it sucks to have to be on unemployment. I can only speak for myself but I have found it very degrading. I have been unemployed for 6 months. Six months!! I just got hired per diem at a well known hospital and yes, I am still waiting to hear from my Federal applications.

Thank goodness for my unemployment (which by the way, we all pay into through our taxes when we are working); I would have never gotten by without it. However, it was still less than half of what I was earning before, so it only covered my bills (but that's fine and that was the point). I hated going to my bank to deposit my check because I knew that the above is what people think. Heck, that's what I thought too! And yes there are people out there who do take advantage of the system. But I think that in light of recent economic times, our way of thinking about this has changed. I felt like a low life, like this is welfare (which it's not, that's different). And yes, I applied like mad to jobs the whole summer which has finally paid off.

Before, this I never received unemployment or any aide. If I had the savings available I would have used that, but thanks to a divorce that was gone too.

So anyway, let me get off my soapbox. I just wanted to make the point that to some, unemployment is a godsend, to others its a free check to do nothing. If you really want to see waste, look at disability. You don't know how many of my clients at clinics would apply for SS or SSI and MILK it, for all it's worth. Again, I am sure there are people who justifiably needed it, but I have seen a lot of wast first hand.

Agreed and understand - it helps some that need and I am happy for that. I was speaking of those that violate the system - your case is not of fraud but one of necessity.

Cheers
