Northern Lights picture

I figured out how to photograph them and have spent the last few nights not getting much sleep so I could go out and watch them. Check it out:

Now it's snowing like mad and 14 F. Just the other day it was 55 and sunny! Where did spring go?

That is pretty awesome! We get pretty colors in the skies after a missle launch at Vandenburg, but nothing that looks like that.

With advice from a friend of mine I used 200 speed film, 30 second shutter speed, and 3.5 aperature. I drove to a hill top outside town (too many trees around my house, which is in a low lying swamp area) and set my dinky tripod on the hood of my car. I have a bunch more that are even better. The moon was out and I got it in several pictures with the lights. My favorite is of the lights of Fairbanks with the aurora above it, but I don't have that one on CD.

I lived there as a kid. I remember having to come in from recess one day when a missle made nice lights in the sky after it blew up. First thing my dad said when he came home was, "It wasn't my part of the missle that malfunctioned!"

Very nice picture, we get the northern lights here, but it is rare to see them like that.

That's a really cool pic. I am using digital and still can't get stuff like that done...
Hopefully, if I upgrade to a new camera, I will be able to take stuff like that.
Hope you weren't being followed by polar bears.....or do they have them in your neck of the woods?

No, Polar bears are marine mammals. They eat seals and stuff. Fairbanks is too far from the ocean.

Since you all seem to like the picture so much, here are a couple more. I haven't figured out how to make the moon not so bright, it was less than a quarter when I took the shot.

And here's one where I was pointing the camera straight up. It shows some good color, but not much else.

Very nice! I hope you don't mind if I use the moon one as a desktop background... it really is beautiful!

Great Pictures Mora. I wish I could move up there...will you marry me? Then I can leave my city loving wife and move to the middle of nowhere and play with my pet polar bear and watch the Northern Lights every night (well, I guess that far north it could be the middle of day and still see them :D )
