Well I went and got xrays..turns out I broke it before in a different place. Can't remember exactly when but after ten years of this job, ten years Army and two years riding bulls, I have busted all sorts of bits and pieces without getting medical attention over the years.
Anyway, the Dr says I have to have three weeks in a cool splint that covers my little finger. The girl who made it had a good laugh when I said I didn't care what colour...so she made it hot pink. She was VERY CUTE!!! so I just giggled like a little school boy and said SHUCKS a lot. In fact the four staff members I saw at that place could all have featured in a swimsuit calendar. I told my wife I might have to break the other nine fingers just so I can LEGALLY go back there time and again.
After 3 weeks of that, they reckon 3 more weeks of rehab. So all up 6 weeks until back on the road which means a lot reading books at the station. I will be put on the front counter, but our station is not open all the time and this basically means I will have a lot of time to do nothing. At least it means 8a - 4p Mon - Friday for a while.
I have enrolled in a course that I need to do to get promoted to SGT so some good will come of it. I had put it off before because I was too busy.
I also intend to put in (tomorrow) for a chance to relieve at the Academy as a firearms/ ops safety instructor for a few months next year. If successful (which I doubt) I will be an acting SGT from January to October next year.
I will lose my Shift allowances but the difference to SGT wages means I will be about the same, with no shift work and no dealing with clients or typing...and lots of playing with guns.
Also found out today that next week I am getting a citation. Not really much to brag about. Late last year and early this year we had cyclones and floods. It was crazy. What they decided to do was give out a citation to anyone who worked at shift, anywhere in the state, during the period. So even if you worked the front counter in an area that was not even directly affected, you get one. Given it is over a few month period, most get it...except for one of the guys at our station who is also in the Army (Commando) and was recalled to do a tour in Afghanistan at the time. I was telling him today that while he had a chest full of medals due to his rather unique second job, he was not able to get a medal I am getting just for going to work.
I was told I am also getting another citation for a job I did during the floods but I will go into detail on that one when it happens, which is likely to be early next year.
