I moved here from NY with guns. Was told it was "voluntary" to register them and I really did not need to. Go to buy ammo and guess what, no FID, no ammo. So even though I don't want to buy a gun in NJ, and it is voluntary, I can't buy ammo here. I broke down and applied for my FID....SIX MONTHS AGO! The PD had layoffs and laid off the guy who processed the applications. Thus it sits on his desk and despite asking for help I get no response.

I was planning on walking into my local NJ station and asking some questions about weapons transfer into the state (since someone in my family has an old Beretta they want to pass down) but I'm thinking maybe I should just declare my residence in NY instead...

NY is a HUNDRED TIMES EASIER! If you are listed in the NYS penal law as a police officer or peace officer.....no permits to buy anything. Still do the NICS check but you actually buy the damn thing on your badge. It means something!

Arizona must seem like a crazy wild west state to those folks on the east coast? Of course, Obama does refer to us as the misguided.

Don't need a badge, don't need a permit to buy, don't need to register and lawful citizens can even carry concealed without a permit.

I wish it was like that here! I am in a state where I carry a badge and gun, have a dozen guns at home, and under the STATE law we are recognized as actual police officers, yet I cannot purhcase handgun ammo. I would love to reside in PA, AZ or even NV where I coudl legally express my rights.

That's the way it should be everywhere. Restricting access to guns only penalizes law-abiding citizens.

    <---- Not a Cop.

Walk into gun shop. Choose firearm that strikes my fancy. Show the guy at the counter my concealed weapons permit. Pay for firearm that struck my fancy. Go home with new firearm in tow.

New Jersey really, really sucks dude. Henry County Police and the Sheriffs Dept are hiring. I'm willing

to put a good word in for you.

Walk into gun shop, see gun I fancy. Drive to local police department (happens to be my place of employment). Tell Chiefs secretary I want gun. Hands me application to purchase a handgun, fill out application and return with appropriate fees, application forwarded to detectives who conduct background check to ensure that I am capable of owning said firearm I wish to purchase. Chief gets application on desk. Chief finally gets around to signing it. Secretary informs me permit to purchase is ready, I pick it up, drive to firearms dealer. I show permit, and ask where said gun went that I wanted. He informs me it has been sold since my last visit, will order new one. Gun finally comes in, but damn my purchase permit will expire before I can pick it up. I drive back to police department get a 45 day extension, return to shop. Produce all documents (Firearms ID card, Permit to Purchase). Clerk calls up state police does NCIC check, I pay fee for said check and BAM! Just like that I gots me a gun.

PA does an intant check ( while you wait at the gun shop ) which takes a simple phone call and you get your gun. Getting a permit is pretty easy , get your local Chief of Police to sign , 3 references and a criminal history check and you are done. Permit is good for 5 years and we are reciprocal with 14 other states.

But you do not need a permit to open carry , just to conceal carry.

Being a active PO , I am fully exempt from any kind of permit , just need the phone check through PSP firearms section like everyone else.

Being a part-timer who turns his gun up at the end of the shift (look! back on sorta topic!) means the only advantage I have in purchasing\carrying whatever is that I have some solid references. Sounds like the same story with Danniator. At least most of the people I've locked up aren't too violent. A few are gang affiliated though, which makes me worry... especially when they got hit with a weapons charge .

Yea, our Class II's while it has been argued are covered under LEOSA turn in their firearms. The way to circumvent it is. 1) PD's firearm which means they have the right to say its only yours while on duty. 2) No ID issued means not compliant with laws requirements. 3) State AG says they cant carry.

Hmm I have a photo ID that just says "Police Officer" on it, so I've wondered if I might be covered. Nevertheless, I think if they wanted me carrying off-duty they wouldn't make me turn in my gun. It would be nice to not have to get home in uniform with an empty holster.
