Ten years ago, the training I had with an ASP included various locks and holds that could be applied. SInce then I have had no refreshers. I have moved depts twice since then and the training in ASP was next to nothing. Any skills I had have long gone due to no use and no training.

In truth the only reason I carry it at all is because the OPM's state I have to, and if I were to shoot someone, some legal POS would crucify me if I didn't have it on me as it would show that I had limited my tactical options and therefore not followed the rules and therefore my dept would not be as accountable for any injuries I sustained or caused and the blame would sit more with me....in short, they could wipe their hands of the situation a little more because I had limited my options, despite the baton being no option against a gun toting mad man, but I can see how they would do that to deflect liability and costs.

There was some security guys in the news here this week who restrained a guy at a casino after he and his drunk mates decided to fight...one died. He was restrained for about 3 minutes.

My last station had some long batons left and a few of the guys would take them out on a Friday/Saturday night to show a bit more presence near the night clubs. The psychological effect was great.

A friend of mine was breaking up a fight involving an out of control Samoan guy of large stature. The Samoan got another guy in a headlock and was choking him. My mate, who is also a big guy started hitting him with his baton. Struck him about ten times in the arms and legs, major muscle group. All it did was bend his baton!!! The guy needed about ten cops on top of him, and one of them managed to get the guy in a headlock and apply a LVNR restrain and render him unconscious. It was like a scene from the HULK apparently. I wish I had seen it!!

Everything we use has it's limitations, we just need to make sure we always have a back up plan!

Oh, God, Samoans.... I had a houseful of young Samoans living on my district for a while. The smallest was probably 220 lbs, he was the baby. They had a very low learning curve it seemed. Every weekend I ended up taking one or more to jail until they finally moved.

It was in vogue here for a while for drug dealers to hire them as body guards.
Apparently, I'm supposed to be more angry about what Mitt Romney does with his money than what Barack & Michelle Obama do with mine

We have a large Pacific Islander community here.

I have never had many dealings with them. They mainly live in the far east of my District and I am in the north west, but most of them are about 6'2", 250 lbs...and that is the children!!!

I often come across some smart mouthed little white kid who thinks he some tuff gangsta type. I am quick to tell them that they will be going to juvie and some 15 year old Samoan who is 6'2" and 200 lbs will use them for a pillow if they don't learn to shut their mouths and learn that they are not as tough as they think they are.

I had one little undesirable who was just like that and I told him this several times. Sure enough he ended up getting a night in juvie. I had the pleasure of escorting him to the lock up. I mentioned my story to the guard at juvie and he winked and smiled. He came back with my little undesirable's room mate, and sure enough he was a Tongan that looked like the HULK!! The guard told me later that the kid was actually a good kid but had got in some trouble. The guard had told the Tongan to make the little gangsta feel "uncomfortable" over night. The next day when the little guy came back to out Watch House for court, and was later released on bail, he was in tears. He was so worried about going back to Juvie....I never saw him again. It scared the sh1t out of him!!!!
