Unhappy Got my first speeding ticket, need some help.

So today I got my first speeding ticket (In Illinois) for going 42 in a 30, didn't see the signs change so fast, had no intentions of speeding in my little honda civic. Anyways, I got a $120 speeding ticket and my license was taken. How fast can I get my license back? I have a job interview friday that I need it for, also could I get a state ID without my license? Also, could I drive and pickup my license if I plead guilty on the form and pay? Should I even plead guilty? thank you so much guys

They took your license? Do you have a bad driving record? If they took it for that reason, you will probably be suspended for some amount of time. If not, I'd contact DMV and talk to them.

I don't know if this is still the case or not, but when I was growing up in Illinois, they used to take your license whenever you were cited and then staple it to the ticket. Your license wasn't suspended, just taken as bond so that you would take care of your ticket. I do remember they went to a signature bond sometimes after that, but maybe they went back to the license bond. Best bet would be to call the local law enforcement agency, or better yet, the agency that stopped you, and ask them. You may not be suspended, just have to use your ticket as your license until it gets resolved.

P.S. Just a note about that, Illinois cops used to look at your license while shining a light from behind it and see how many different staple holes there were to see how many ticket's you'd had before!

That was harsh. Oregon doesn't even have a signature bond. Don't show up in court, you're suspended. Somehow I suspect that if a person has no intention of showing up for court, signing a form isn't going to matter much. Especially if the penalty is the same.

I'm glad we don't have it, it's one less thing I had to argue with someone over. Even if they didn't want take the ticket, I threw it in the car. The end result was always the same for them if they didn't take care of it.

You dont even have to sign a ticket in PA. If you refuse to sign , I write in bold letter " REFUSED TO SIGN " so the judge can see it.

I have never had a ticket for anything before, I am 20 years old, college student at Western Illinois University, law enforcement major. Its just taken until I pay I guess. I just NEED it before friday for a job interview. There is no court date, I would have to set one up. I want to, this is my first violation ever, im a law enforcement major. I'd probably get supervision. What do you guys think?

The fact you're a LE major is immaterial. Don't even bring it up, nobody cares. Trust me on that. Take the ticket with you and if you're stopped, show it to the officer and explain the situation.

didnt know that, alright. Would you setup a court date if you were me? I just don't want this to hurt my chances of becoming a police officer, or raising my insurance if I just pay it.

Virtually EVERYBODY has gotten a speeding / traffic ticket at some point in their life. If this were to DQ you , it would have DQ'd a TON of people.

Car insurance , thats up to them. At your age , I would expect an increase.

Accepting responsibility for your actions, good OR bad, is always the right thing to do.

I would simply pay the fine if I failed to abide by the law, however there ARE circumstances where I would try to fight a traffic ticket.

    Check out this sign:

    What does it say?

    Nobody else knows either.

    How about this one?

    No clue.

We are all required to abide by the law, and that includes the state. Failure to properly post and / or maintain road signs, can not only lead to citizens unintentionally violating the law, but it is also unsafe. Should I be cited for something of this nature, I would fight it in court, as it is the responsibility of the state to position and maintain road signs. However, as I stated before, if I simply broke the law of my own accord, I would pay the fine.

I'm thinking a couple of things. Supervision for a SPEEDING TICKET? How the hell fast were you going? Also, you might want to ask your school for a refund.

The violation is for a traffic offense. Unless it's another violation to not sign the ticket, I can't see that it should matter.

It varies from state to state, even judge to judge. In Oregon, traffic school is available for some offenses if you have a clean record. Speeding, it depends on how much over the limit you were going. But even at that, it's the discretion of the judge, he doesn't have to give you a break on that either. But then again, Illinois isn't Oregon, who knows?

Nah here you are only signing that you received a copy of the citation. By writing "copy given" you are accomplishing the same thing. Most people have no problem signing but with others you would think you were asking them to sign their own death warrant.
