    Internship Worth it?

    Hello,

I have been in Europe the last 6 weeks and was offered an internship next summer. It is 10 weeks long, for a non-profit organization in Ireland. I would fly out to Dublin, Ireland and stay with a host family.

The internship: I would go to a few poor suburbs outside of Dublin and talk to teenagers who have dropped out of school and started drugs.

The issue: I would need about $10,000 to do this internship.

I would like opinions on whether you think this is worth it or not.

    Thanks RP community,
    Nick Vitalone

No, I wouldn't spend 10 grand on it unless it's just something you want to do. It won't help you $10K towards being a police officer.
Apparently, I'm supposed to be more angry about what Mitt Romney does with his money than what Barack & Michelle Obama do with mine

The value of such an internship is going to be based on your views of helping others. It will have little efect on a future LE job.

Why can't you do the same type of thing right here in the USA for a LOT less money ? We sure have plenty of " teens who have dropped out and are using drugs". The 10 grand seems like a LOT OF MONEY for an intesnship for a non-profit org. Why background or abilities do you have to do this kind of work and will kids from Ireland eve listen to a Yank ?

Mcsap I could do it here as well, I have already been looking into it. Ireland is amazing and I would love to return. The money is definitely an issue. The reason they think they would listen to me is because of my life growing up. My parents were druggies/drug dealers, got me to start doing drugs, once old enough I was going to drop out, then we got put into foster care and my baby sister was born two days after my birthday. I quit drugs, helped my family with groceries and bills since I could work, I graduated and am now a sophomore in college. I live life as optimistically as possible and I enjoy helping people.

And the Irish actually look up to Americans a whole lot more than you would think. They are in love with our way of life and America helped them become who they are today.

Your username suggests you want to become a police officer, you may want to research whether your past drug usage will disqualify you from this profession before you put too much more energy and effort into pursuing it. It's certainly noble that you want to help others and share your experience to overcome drugs, but past drug usage if extensive or involving "hard drugs" will often permanently disqualify individuals from becoming law enforcement officers. Just food for thought.

Kimble, thanks for the warning. However, this is something I have feared since I decided to do this. I asked some cops and openly admitted I did pills and marijuana, nothing too hard, and they all told me as long as they are far enough in the past some places might take me. The experience and knowledge might also help me a little. This is something I have wanted to do for a long time, and I will not give up until I get a final no.
