Detroit: Hey LEO's, we'll pay you to move into the city! LEO's: No thanks....

    Can you blame them?

    Certainly not.

Cop to LeDuff: Detroit's Too Dangerous

It's a pretty sad state of affairs when your city sucks so bad, you can't even PAY people to move there. However, Detroit seems to be the future norm IMO, rather than an anomaly.

Years ago, Portland offered cops "deals" on houses and mortgages if they would buy homes in certain areas of the city. I think maybe two people took them up on it.

Once upon a time to be hired by DPD you had to live inside the city. I'm not sure when they did away with that, mid to late 90s, or so I've heard. It's pretty comical that they are trying to bring the officers and their families back; it's one thing to work in a post apocalyptic looking environment, it's another to try to live and raise a family there.

They tried that in Portland in the late 70's, it lasted less than a year. The number of applicants plummeted. And Portland is nothing like Detroit.

I imagine there is a VERY small number of cities that would be attractive to live AND work in, as an LEO.

Most cities have higher costs of living across the board, additional taxes, and any decent housing would cost far more for less space than what you could get in a burb. Throw in the fact that you would be closer to the area you patrol, which means you have a higher chance of seeing the people you deal with at work while "off duty" and....yea. I wouldn't do it either.

I'd take the burbs or the country EVERY time.

I went to the academy with guys from a sh*thole city who are require to maintain residency there for their entire career. I know other cities (Boston, Providence) that require residence for the first X years of employment.

I'm glad I live far far away from where I work. If I see anyone hanging around my neighborhood who I've locked up, I know why they're here and will be dealt with... no accidental greetings living this far away.

I'm sure Portland is a beautiful quiet lil town compared to "The D."

Actually when it comes to Detroit, it's far more costly to live in it's so-called suburbs. Some, actually a lot of the outlining communities are VERY costly because it was where all the money from the motor industries went (when money was good). Of course the areas I am referring to are at least a 45-60 min drive for a commute, pending traffic maybe more.

I grew up in one of these areas. If my job would of landed me in "The D," honestly, I'd be facing at least a daily 60+ commute.

I'll be honest, I work in one. I'm in the minority of officers who DON'T live in the city. However, this city is NOTHING like Detroit.

About 1/3 of Portland is pretty nice actually, but those areas are also a lot more expensive to live in too. The majority of our people live outside the city limits. Even if your neighbors know you're a cop, they know you're not one in that city and have fewer expectations, I suspect and less apt to ask for a "favor".

While this city has more expensive areas than others, honestly, we have guys living just about everywhere in the city. It's wierd.
