Lets see, in 1986, I had been out of the academy for a year.
I had made Asst Chief of Police in a 4 man dept in 6 months.
(no politics in a small dept LOL)(I was also looking for another job)
We were buying used KHP patrol cars with 50k on the odometer.
I think it was a Dodge Dipolmat with a 4 barrel carb if memory serves.
Couldnt catch anything with a fuel injected motor.
6 inch vent heavy Dan Wesson .357 magnum with 158 jhps for a duty weapon.
We had one portable radio, about the weight of a brick and slightly larger.
We did reports on a MANUAL typewriter. Then the dispatcher would redo them
on an IBM electric typewriter.
On a clear night, I can see the other deputies emergency lights at least 10 miles away.
But it isnt flat here LOL
Heh, my first duty weapon was a S&W Model 15, 38 spl. Our ammo was 158 grain, solid lead bullets. We didn't go to half jacketed HP until about 1977 or so. Later, I bought a S&W Model 19, but still had to carry the .39 duty ammo. We started the transition to semi's around 1988 or 89. For a long time, we had a choice between .45 or 9 mm. We finally settled on Glock only and uniform could carry either the Mdl 17 or 21 and plain clothes could carry the Mdl 19. A couple of kabooms with the 21 and they were taken out of service. We had to buy our own guns until about 1994 or so when our union got it in the contract the city would issue them.
I fought like hell to keep my IBM Selectric during the 90's. They were trying to get rid of them, but we didn't have personal computers and I didn't want to have to dictate every single memo or short report I did. It needed repair and I thought for a while I'd have to pay for it out of my own pocket, but the captain finally authorized it. I suspect it was tossed the day after I left.
