Unhappy Prison is too good for some . . . =(

There's a trial on at the moment here in Melbourne, it's such a tragic murder, I know, murder is a tragic event . . but when it involves kids . . .

Arthur Phillip Freeman, 37, of Hawthorn, has pleaded not guilty to murdering Darcey on January 29, 2009, by throwing her 58 metres to her death on what was supposed to be the child's first day of school.

The older brother of a four-year-old girl thrown from the West Gate Bridge by their father asked him repeatedly to go back for his sibling because the little girl could not swim. In a video of a police interview played to the Victorian Supreme Court this morning, the boy, then aged six, told a policewoman he did not hear his sister make a sound as she was tossed over the bridge railing.

Darcey Freeman didn't scream when thrown off bridge, brother tells court | Herald Sun
"The beauty of life is, while we cannot undo what is done, we can see it, understand it, learn from it and change. So that every new moment is spent not in regret, guilt, fear or anger, but in wisdom, understanding and love." ~ Jennifer Edwards

This is so incredibly sad. I just can not understand what would cause someone to kill a child, especially their own.

That is too awful to even comprehend how someone could do that. Prison is indeed way to good for this ######.

very tragic but even more tragic the surviving child witnessed this event being taken place, I will never comprehend why such monsters are blessed with these children :( I personally think he should be thrown off the grand cannon no water just straight rock and even that would be to fast..

He'll be at the bottom of the food chain in prison, that's something at least.

yeah true but do you really think even that is justice? I think it should be EYE FOR AN EYE... if that's how it worked I guarantee half the stuff would stop... the other prisoners might do him in ( * might*) the rest of the time he is living it up with food to eat a toilet to pee in and a bed to sleep on...for the rest of his life AND no bills!!! I believe in old sparky FULL FORCE none of this prison for life stuff... ESP when it comes to killing a child I can hardly wait for the casey anthony trial I have been hoping she will get the death penalty..... but that's just my thoughts....

That's contrary to I don't know how many studies concerning the death penalty being a deterrent. Criminals don't think of the consequences because they don't think they'll get caught. Do you really believe this guy was thinking, "If I throw her off this cliff, I probably go to prison for the rest of my life."? Or does someone think, "If I rob this drug store, it'll cost me several years of my life in the joint'?

The death penalty gets them off the earth and guarantees they'll never commit another crime, but it never affects potential criminals. If and when they do start worrying about getting caught, it's well after the crime was done and the police start closing in. And many still think they can beat it.

Even driving over the speed limit, people never think, "I'll probably get a ticket with a hefty fine, but driving this fast is worth it".

I'm sorry, but what on earth are you referring to and how does this relate to the thread topic? What a non sequitur.

Fortunately, that's not the purpose of the justice system.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not soft on crime. Oregon passed a minimum sentencing initiative nearly 20 years ago and it had a major effect on crime. Not as a deterrent, but people were locked up for years for violent crimes. There is a certain percentage of the population who are aberrant and will commit crimes no matter what. Remove them from society and the crime rates go down. But that's the purpose of the law, not retribution or revenge.

read the bottom ^^^^ of Ret's post, he was saying people still speed even though they know they will get a ticket in referance to the topic that bad people despite what the consequences are ( life in jail vs death penalty) they will still do bad things b/c they are bad people I was agreeing to his point of yes I know speeding is bad and yes I still do it.... bottom line he has a very valid point

I know it should'nt be like that but geez anyone that would hurt a kid like that needs to be nolonger of existence..perfect example Somer Thompson's killer has yet to go to court due to a having a cold??? Really? are you kidding me? he dismembered this eight yr old girl threw her in a garbage truck which also did more damage she was dumped in a landfill not found for a week but yet he misses court because he had a cold....that's the cases i'm talking about...

back to the original story, how long do you think the guy that threw his daughter off the bridge will wait to go to court or trial? weeks? a month? possibly even a year ? meanwhile the kid is dead in the ground...i'm not saying he should not have a trial i'm saying I think they give them waaay to much leadway and what I mean by that if you have hard cold without a doubt evidence of a crime why wait so long to go to trial??

all I know is if something ever happened to my kid this way by some maniac I would not want them to live out their life in jail. but you are right this is way off topic from the orginal posted thread. sorry kazz did not mean to hijack it!!

I agree totally. I can't stand the argument that we should get rid of the death penalty because it doesn't deter crime. I always counter with, That's why it's called the "death PENALTY" and not the "death DETERRENT"!!
