LA MIRADA - Officials jailed two unobservant burglary suspects last month after they tried to steal items from a gas station where four deputies were having coffee, authorities said Wednesday.
Jacob Wallace, 29, of Costa Mesa and Robert Martin, 19, of Victorville were booked on suspicion of commercial burglary, Los Angeles County sheriff's Capt. Patrick Maxwell said in a written statement.
The incident took place about 3:50 a.m. on Jan. 23 at the Chevron Food Mart, 14021 Rosecrans Ave., the captain said.
"The suspects, prior to entering the store, did not notice two Los Angeles County sheriff's marked patrol vehicles parked on the side of the location, nor did they notice the four uniformed deputies standing inside the store," Maxwell said.
Wallace and Jacobs helped themselves to an 18-pack of beer and snack items, totalling $18.76, and ran out the door without paying, officials said.
Surveillance video capturing the event shows the men bolting from the store, followed immediately by the four deputies.
"The deputies immediately apprehended and arrested the suspects as they entered their vehicle," Maxwell added.
Wallace and Martin were released from jail two days after their arrests after posting bail, officials said.
