Revellers caught in drug blitz at Good Vibrations ~ A WOMAN is being interviewed by police over drug trafficking accusations after being found with 100 amphetamine tablets at the gates of music festival Good Vibrations.
Passive alert dogs (PAD) sniffed the drugs on the woman, believed to be 19, as she entered Flemington Racecourse - making her one of three people being interviewed in relation to alleged trafficking. Police also detected a man in his early 20s with 36 tablets after conducting searches at both entrances to the event.
Drugs detected included amphetamines, ecstasy and cannabis, which were mainly for personal use. So far, three people have been nabbed with a traffickable quantity of drugs, while 32 people have been detected with drugs for personal use during the operation and will be placed on a diversion program. The preliminary figures are likely to continue to rise as ticket holders continue to pour through the gates.
More than 15,000 people were expected to be at the event, which boasts international and local musicians such as Faithless, Sasha, Damian Marley, The Ting Tings and Ludacris. Sen-Sgt Don Brown, of the Melbourne divisional response unit, said although he was not surprised to catch drug traffickers and users at the event, it was disappointing revellers did not heed the warnings. "It beggars belief they continue to take these drugs,'' he said. "People still take the risk...because there's a perception these are party drugs.'' "That mindset needs to change.''
He said people had no idea what was in the drugs or where they were made. But Sen-Sgt Brown conceded that although the police dog operation was a 'medium'' response, drug users would have slipped through the net. "We do all we can to stop them,'' he said.
"It's hard to say (how many get through), but on the law of averages some get through.''
