Off-duty police officer fights for life after bashing

A QUEENSLAND police officer has regained consciousness after he was allegedly bashed by a 14-year-old boy.

Constable Glenn Walker was last night in a coma in Brisbane's Princess Alexandra Hospital, with a fractured skull and bleeding on the brain. This morning he regained consciousness but remained in intensive care. The 32-year-old father of two was off duty when he was attacked while walking home from a Hervey Bay nightclub.

A 14-year-old boy has been charged over the assault.

Constable Walker was at a McDonald's about 1am when he was approached by the youths in the beachside precinct of Pialba early yesterday. He is believed to have crossed the road away from the youths when one called out for him to stop. Turning around, he was allegedly punched in the face. Stepping back and telling the teens to "settle down", he was then allegedly punched repeatedly, even after he was on the ground.

He was flown by helicopter to Brisbane's Princess Alexandra Hospital, and placed in a medical coma. His wife was believed to be at his side. Queensland Police Union president Ian Leavers, who visited Constable Walker in hospital, said the young officer was the victim of a "cold-blooded and callous attack". Constable Walker only recently moved to Hervey Bay for his first police posting. He had moved his family to Queensland from Shepparton, Victoria, where he had worked as a construction materials salesman, hoping for a better life, colleagues said.

On Friday, he had signed his son up for a junior soccer team, and the keen cricket fan was working hard to be involved in the community. Fraser Coast Mayor Mick Kruger said Hervey Bay residents would be shocked by the bashing. "On behalf of the community, I extend my apologies to the family for what has happened," he said. Mr Leavers said it was a very worrying time for the officer's wife and family. "(His wife) has got a brave face but there's a lot of heartache and pain," he said. "Something's wrong with the justice system when this was a cold-blooded and callous attack and now the alleged offender, because he's a juvenile, could very well avoid any criminal sanction. "The viciousness and randomness of this attack should shock us."

A police spokeswoman said a 14-year-old boy had been charged with grievous bodily harm and robbery and would be dealt with under the Youth Justices Act.

every time I hear about a story like this it is so unnerving, because you choose to be a menace you decide to destroy someone that is trying to make a differance, it really is infuriating. I think that anyone that causes bodily arm to another person with intention to hurt should receive the full punishment with no sugar coating. but I also am one of those people that really don't believe in life sentences either...I don't think that is fair justice I think whatever you do to your victim should be done to you.

I was going to ask if maybe the bad guy would get more than a slap on the wrist like he would receive here in the USA, but then I saw this...

I can't stand how they can commit an adult crime, showing evil intent, and then people just shrug it off due to them being youthful.

A 14-year-old boy was charged with grievous bodily harm and robbery after he allegedly also stole the wallet of Const Walker, who was off duty at the time.The union boss said the Youth Justice Act has been a revolving door for repeat offenders and seems to offer nothing more than a slap on the wrist for everything except murder.

"If we are tough on these young offenders now, rather than giving them a slap on the wrist, then hopefully we can steer them away from a life of crime, which is all the Youth Justice Act is steering them towards now," Mr Leavers said.

"If it is the case that this alleged offender has previously committed a serious assault against a police officer and if he had been dealt with harshly then, this latest act of cold-blooded violence may never have happened."

In his short time in service as a policeman, constable Glenn Walker has already made his mark fighting crime in Hervey Bay.

Witnesses said Constable Walker had been crossing Boat Harbour Drive between McDonald's and a block of shops in Main Street. It is reported that he tried to negotiate with those confronting him but was allegedly struck and fell to the ground and hit his head.

Can't say for sure, but I think that they are both about 3 hours (give or take), away from Hervey Bay.

The last news was on the 17th ~ Const Walker has been making steady progress in Brisbane’s Princess Alexandra Hospital. Earlier this week he was transferred from the intensive care unit to the neurology ward.
