I must say I was quite surprised by some of the answers I read in that thread. Is it a common theme that schools do not want people using their facilities, ie there's that much damage or other shenanigans that go on?
In my area, this is completely a non-issue. Hell, even the private schools don't care if people are using their basketball courts or playground equipment outside of school hours. Both our public High School and middle school are located on large hills that bring in sledders by the hundreds during winter.
The only things that I think are "closed" to the public are the football field and track. Our schools have a lot of other real-estate.... soccer fields, tennis courts, cross country trails, baseball diamonds, indoor pool - all open to the public.
I for one would think, being that schools are funded with public money, they should be open to the public. I guess that's not the case everywhere.
