Yes, it is a tad hard to get a judge to hammer someone for sliding on the ice unless they were doing something STUPID.
Their banged up car(s) is the standard penalty.

I believe it was Monday night when I was visiting some friends from my old dorm. LU--my school--has a policy where you have to put in a request to have guests stay overnight (and my RA, being rather legalistic, wouldn't let me stay for a while), and it was just a few minutes from Midnight which is curfew at my school. So, I had to leave although there was freezing rain that ended maybe 10 minutes prior.
Needless to say, I drove like a great great grandma (no offense to any of you great great grandmas out there) the whole way back to my apartment and was sure to take a backroad rather than go on the interstate...the roads actually didn't seem that icy if at all, but my Floridian butt was too scared to make any assumptions.
Thank goodness this town is practically dead around midnight.![]()
I'm used to driving on snow and ice but that doesn't mean I like it. I won't drive when the roads are bad unless it's an emergency or I have to drive to/from work and then I take it really, really slow and give myself extra time to get where I need to go. What gets me are all the idiots who tail gait and speed, especially in snowy/icy conditions.![]()
In crap like that, we don't do reports unless there are injuries. It's called "accident alert". Basically, you want a report, you exchange information and do the report online. If I got that call, I'd park at the top of the hill to keep any more idiots from going down, and wave.

They've got us surrounded? Good. Now we can fire in any direction, those bastards wont get away this time

Before I moved to the toasty south west, I lived in New England. For some reason, even though I grew up driving in the mid-west where we get our own share of blizzards (complete with whiteout blowing snow), it felt like I was the only one there who was willing to give myself distance between myself and the vehicle in front of me. People were constantly riding my tailpipe. It was worse when I was driving the old Honda (maybe they felt I needed a push?), but I still got it even when I bought my truck. I absolutely HATE tailgators (misspelling intended) no matter what the weather.![]()

In all seriousness, when I was a student, someone hit my car in a snowstorm, and the nice police officer gave the other driver a ticket. I am glad that he did, too, because the other driver's insurance company immediately covered everything. The driver was really apologetic at the scene, but she later lawyered up and decided to fight the ticket in court. (She still lost.) (And BTW, I was out in the snow only because they hadn't canceled classes that day.)
